Cody Crader was the Northwest Region winner of the MaxPreps Citizen Athlete Award presented by the Army National Guard. Cody is graduating from Fernley High School in Fernley, Nevada which lies 30 minutes east of Reno.
Tuesday, June 7th was another ordinary sunny day in Fernley, NV although the Senior Awards ceremony at Fernley High would be nothing but ordinary. Cody Crader was 1 of only 10 students nationwide being honored with the 2nd Annual MaxPreps Citizen Athlete Award presented by the Army National Guard.
After a breathtaking ride through the Sierra Nevada range, the tour made its way to Fernley High School with the white-cap Mountains as the backdrop. Inside the school, the senior class and their proud parents were enjoying refreshments while gearing up for the long-awaited awards ceremony. When it came time for Cody to receive his national award, Athletics Director Jeff Knutson welcomed MaxPreps representative Scott Hargrove to the stage. Scott talked about the honor of the award and how great this young man's accomplishments are when stacked up against 1,500 contestants nationwide. Scott then handed the microphone to Nevada Army National Guard Staff Sergeant Johnnie Oliveira who highlighted some of Cody's outstanding community-service accomplishments, and proudly awarded him with a Citizen Athlete plaque. To cap off the night, Scott Hargrove then emerged with an oversized scholarship check for $2,500 and gladly presented the scholarship to Cody. Thereafter, Cody received a standing ovation as friends, faculty, and his mother looked on with pride.
Cody Crader is truly a Citizen Athlete worthy of this award. Congratulations next year in college!
