John Tyler may have been the 10th president of the United States, but he
is No. 1 when it comes to ranking high school football teams named
after presidents.
With Americans choosing a president today in
the national election, MaxPreps looks at the top 25 teams named after a
U.S. President. All of the teams on the list are either named after a
president, or the city is named after a president (and the school shares
that name) or the school is named after something that is named after a
president (e.g. Lincoln-Way East is named after a freeway that is named
after president Abraham Lincoln).
Schools are not chosen simply
because they have a name similar to a president. For instance,
Washington (Miami) is not chosen because it is named after educator
Booker T. Washington, not president George Washington.
President
John Tyler was not from Texas (he was born and died in Virginia), but he
was a believer in territorial expansion and the United States added
Texas as a territory during his term in office from 1841 to 1845 (he
took office following the death of our ninth president, William Henry
Harrison). Fun fact about Tyler, although he was born in the 18th
century (1790) and died in 1862, he still has
two grandchildren alive today.
Tyler
(Texas), the alma mater of NFL great Earl Campbell, is 9-1 on the
season and ranked No. 18 in the state of Texas by the MaxPreps football
computer rankings with a rating of 53.9.
James Madison, our
shortest president, comes up big in the Top 25 rankings with six
schools. Three of them are in the top five with Trotwood-Madison
(Trotwood, Ohio) at No. 2, Madison Central (Miss.) at No. 3 and Madison
County (Fla.) at No. 5.
Schools are listed with their current record and their MaxPreps computer rating.
