Two American high school swimmers earned a bronze medal on Saturday during the London Olympics.

, an incoming senior at
Regis Jesuit (Aurora, Colo.), and Lia Neal, who will be a senior at Covenant of the Sacred Heart (Manhattan, N.Y.), teamed with Jessica Hardy and Allison Schmitt to place third in the 400-meter freestyle relay with a time of 3:34.24. Australia won in 3:33.15, while the Netherlands was second in 3:33.79.
Franklin was the MaxPreps 2011-12
Female Athlete of the Year.
An incoming sophomore at
Algonquin Regional (Northborough, Mass.), Dorian McMenemy was the only female on the Dominican Republic swim team. She qualified during last year's World Championships in China and recently was named the Dominican Republic's Female Athlete of the Year.
The still-growing 6-foot-1 standout swam the 100-meter butterfly during Saturday's preliminaries. She was second in the first heat with a time of 1:05.78, but did not advance to the next round of 16.
* Preliminaries in gymnastics produced a great shocker when world champion Jordyn Wieber, an incoming senior at
DeWitt (Mich.), did not make the all-around finals. She was beaten out by USA teammates Gabby Douglas, a home-schooled incoming junior from Virginia Beach, Va., and Aly Raisman, a recent graduate of
Needham ( Mass.).
* In fencing, Lee Kiefer, a recent graduate of
Dunbar (Lexington, Ky.), was eliminated in the quarterfinals 15-10 by eventual silver medalist Arianna Errigo of Italy. Earlier the 5-4, 105-pound University of Notre Dame recruit had beaten South Korea's Jung Gil Ok 15-13 by scoring the match's final three points.
