In starting the season as the No. 1 team in the Preseason MaxPreps Top 25 high school baseball rankings, St. Mary's Prep (Orchard Lake, Mich.) is attempting to do something that no other Michigan school has done since media outlets first began doing baseball rankings in the late 1970s — finish the season as the No. 1 team in the nation.
Since baseball rankings began in 1976, Michigan has never had a national champion. MaxPreps recently selected
retroactive champions back to 1910 and Michigan landed a pair of teams on that list — Muskegon in 1942 and Central Catholic (Novi) in 1941. However, no team from Michigan has ever won a national championship in real time.
The Eaglets are a strong bet to get the job done. Besides returning one of the nation's top pitchers in Brock Porter, St. Mary Prep also has a tremendous offense that averaged nearly 11 runs a game. Three Eaglets made the Perfect Game All-American Classic and those same three, Porter, Ike Irish and Nolan Schubart, are ranked as the top three players in the state.
If St. Mary's Prep should stumble along the way, IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) and Buford (Ga.) could be there to take over the top spot. IMG Academy can match St. Mary Prep for college commits on its roster as nearly a dozen are headed to Division 1 colleges. Additionally, two of the Ascenders — Jackson Ferris and Elijah Green — are considered first-round draft picks.
Buford, meanwhile, was No. 1 for most of the 2021 season in the MaxPreps Top 25, but two late-inning losses in the postseason ended its season early. Fortunately, the Wolves return the nation's top pitching prospect in Dylan Lesko, who is expected to go in the top half of the MLB Draft in July. He's one of three returning starters from last year's pitching rotation.

Outlook: The Eaglets are simply loaded. There are 12 Division 1 commits on the team and seven starters return from a team that scored 480 runs and hit 59 home runs. Three members of the team, Porter, Irish and Schubart, played in the Perfect Game All-American Classic. The trio rank as the state's top three players by Perfect Game. Only a loss to Saline kept St. Mary's Prep from going undefeated and winning a national championship in 2021.
