To win 50 consecutive games, several factors have to be at work, the overall talent level of the team is great and along the way a little good fortune has to come your way.
For Maryville High School, the latter showed up as it survived William Blount when the Governors missed two extra points, the last one coming with two minutes remaining in the game, to give Maryville a 20-19 win.
The Rebels, known for their variety of trick plays, pulled out one for what turned out to be the gamewinning score with the game tied at 13-13.
Maryville wide receiver Thomas Shuler scored on a hook-and-ladder play with four minutes to play.
The play was put in motion as Rebel quarterback Brent Burnette hit University of Tennessee commitment Aaron Douglas, who then turned and pitched the ball to a streaking Shuler.
William Blount responded as running back Darrin Garner scored from 1-yard out to cut the deficit to 20-19, but it missed the PAT giving Maryville the win.
