Maggie Harrelson had one last shot to extend the Carlmont High girls soccer team's season on a free kick with no time remaining in regulation on the Scots' Central Coast Section semifinal playoff game against top-seeded Los Altos last week.
Trailing 2-1, Harrelson lasered a shot over the wall of Los Gatos defenders, past the goalie and into the net to tie the game at 2-2.
But despite the senior's heroics, Los Altos scored the game-winner 24 minutes into overtime to knock out the two-time defending champions one game short of their bid for a third-straight section title.
Softball
The Notre Dame High softball team braced itself to face Archbishop Mitty ace Megan Wirth, who handed Notre Dame a two-hit, 2-0 loss the last time she pitched against them, on Friday.
Instead of Wirth, the Tigers drew Keiliani Ricketts, a left-handed sophomore.
The Tigers probably would have preferred Wirth.
Ricketts no-hit Notre Dame and helped Mitty clinch the West Catholic Athletic League title and the top seed in this week's WCAL tournament.
It was Ricketts' third no-hitter of the year as Mitty improved to 11-0 WCAL and 21-1 overall. Ricketts improved to 5-0 on the season as a pitcher.
Notre Dame finished second in the league after a 10-2 league campaign and a 19-4-1 overall mark.
Katie Fleury, on third base following a one-out double and a sacrifice, scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning to account for the only offense in the game.
The two teams will likely meet again in the WCAL tournament and in the section's Division II playoffs over the next two weeks.
Baseball
Serra High's march to the WCAL championship took many twists and turns during the season.
But the path to the league championship saw the Padres reach the promised land, otherwise known as the Oakland Coliseum where the Oakland A's call home, and Serra's bats felt right at home at the big park.
Hitting two home runs, Serra felt right at home in a 12-6 victory over Mitty that clinched the league championship for the Padres.
Serra (12-2, 22-4) will host St. Ignatius on Tuesday afternoon in the opening game of the WCAL tournament.
In other baseball action across the Central Coast Section, Matt Mosher's seventh-inning grand slam led Menlo-Atherton (5-8 PAL Bay, 12-12-1) to a 12-8 victory over Menlo School (8-6, 16-9) and kept the Bears slim hopes for a CCS playoff bid alive.
Meanwhile, league leaders Burlingame (12-2, 21-5) and Mills (10-3, 16-5) each won on Friday with Mills and Menlo-Atherton scheduled to resume a suspended game, tied 4-4 in the 10th, on Monday.
In the PAL Ocean, Aragon (10-3, 15-9) stayed ahead of Carlmont in the race for the league title with a 10-6 win over Sequoia while Carlmont (9-4, 13-10-1) defeated Terra Nova 8-7.
Tennis
Top-seeded Sacred Heart Prep (25-0) swept away Independence 7-0 in the second round of the CCS team tennis championships. Third-seeded Menlo School defeated Aptos 5-2 while fourth-seeded Bellarmine dominated Menlo-Atherton 6-1.
