For just the second time in high school girls basketball history, a player from Michigan leads the nation in scoring average.
Mia McGregor of
Mio-Au Sable (Mio) tops the MaxPreps leaderboard at 43.4 points per game.
MaxPreps has compiled a list of the leading scorers – average and total
points – for every season dating back to 1975 when schools began switching
over from 6-on-6 to 5-on-5. Sources include state association websites,
Cal-Hi Sports Record Book & Almanac, Bob Springs' Texas Basketball
Records, LuckyShow.org and the MaxPreps leaderboards.
McGregor is the only player in the nation with an average over 40 points per game this season and leads the No. 2 scorer on the list by over four points a game. The junior point guard broke her own state record of 41.2 points per game, established last year as a sophomore, and has the three highest scoring averages in state history. She was No. 2 nationally last year behind Iyanna Wade of
Clairton (Pa.), who averaged 41.5 points per game.

With 2,659 career points, McGregor is just
376 points away from breaking the state scoring record.
A
Monterey (Lubbock, Texas) player leads the nation in total points for the third straight year, at least for the time being.
Ambrosia Cole tossed in 1,091 points this year. Her former teammate, Aaliyah Chavez, scored 1,451 points in 2025 and 1,324 points in 2024.
A pair of California players could surpass Cole this weekend, however.
Kaleena Smith of
Ontario Christian (Ontario) has 1,079 points and she will face
Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) in the Open Division championship Saturday in Sacramento.
Lauren Harris of
Faith Christian (Yuba City), meanwhile, has 1,062 points and will play Saturday morning against
Palisades (Pacific Palisades) in the Division IV state final. Faith Christian has 42 students in grades 9-12 while Palisades has 2,991. Harris' sister led the nation in scoring average in 2022 at 46.3 points per game.
In the first round of the playoffs against
Miramonte (Orinda), Harris passed former Ontario Christian standout Chloe Briggs for third place on the state's all-time scoring list with 3,552 points. Smith, meanwhile, needs just 27 points to hit the 3,000-point milestone.
