Video: Xcellent 25 Volleyball Rankings presented by the Army National Guard - November 3Top-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral found itself in an unfamiliar position last Saturday night in the Indiana 4A state semifinals - trailing, 2-1. But the Fighting Irish battled to win the final two sets to win the match and keep their perfect season intact while earning a spot in Saturday's 4A state championship match.
By running its win streak to 35, Cathedral also held on to the No. 1 spot in this week's MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Volleyball Rankings presented by the Army National Guard ... but barely. No. 2 Jesuit (Portland, Ore.) continues to overwhelm opponents, as the Crusaders (29-0) have lost just two sets (against 74 wins) this season and have won 66 matches in a row over two seasons.
Cathedral hadn't been pushed to a fifth set since Aug. 25, also a 3-2 win over Center Grove (Greenwood, Ind.). Cathedral also trailed 2-1 in that match before rallying to win.
Juniors Nia Parker-Robinson (30 kills) and Maria Schorr (57 assists) led Cathedral's semifinal comeback win over Center Grove. The Fighting Irish will play 34-3 Fort Wayne Carroll (Ind.) for the 4A title. Carroll, ranked in the Top 25 three weeks ago, defeated Center Grove earlier this season.
Led by Stanford-bound seniors Jenna Gray and Audriana Fitzmorris, No. 3 St. James Academy (Lenexa, Kan.) captured its seventh state title in eight years, as it swept through the state 5A bracket without losing a set.
Gabriel Richard (Ann Arbor, Mich.) remained at No. 4 by winning its postseason opener to improve to 35-0.
Torrey Pines (San Diego) breezed through the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions to run its win streak to 24 and moved up to No. 5, as P.K. Yonge (Gainesville, Fla.) struggled with 19-7 First Academy (Orlando, Fla.) and dropped to No. 7.
New to the Top 10 this week is Benet Academy (Isle, Ill.).
Redondo Union (Newport Beach, Calif.) jumped to No. 12 after running its win streak to a dozen and on the heels of winning its own RUHS Power Tournament over the weekend.
New to the Top 25 this week are unbeaten Jonathan Alder (Plain City, Ohio) and Williamsville East (East Amherst, N.Y.).
