Every so often a team comes along that appears to be unbeatable. That's because sometimes they are.
For this piece, we took a look through the record books trying to figure out which Nebraska winter sports programs belong on a list of the Top 10 dynasties in the Cornhusker State.
As it turns out, a program had to win at least four state titles in a row at some point in its history to be considered for this list. Now let's go back in time and see which programs made the ‘A' list for Nebraska's winter sports dynasties.
1. Creighton Prep (Omaha) boys swimming and divingCreighton Prep gets the No. 1 nod simply because its streak in the pool and board is ongoing. The Junior Jays won Class A championships beginning in 1996 and ending in 2002, and now have won eight straight beginning in 2007. Between the two streaks, Creighton Prep has won state titles in 15 of the last 19 seasons.
2. Omaha Westside boys swimming and divingWestside put together three state championship winning streaks of three or more beginning with the 1965-66 sports season, and ending in 1985-86. In all, the Warriors racked up 19 of 21 titles after bringing home the champions' hardware from 1966-68, 1970-76 and 1978-86.
3. Skutt Catholic (Omaha) wrestlingHad Skutt Catholic not fallen to team champion Central City 149-130 in 2011, the SkyHawks would have fallen into the top rung. But Skutt Catholic drops in at No. 3 after having won 16 of the last 17 Class B wrestling titles and finishing as runner-up in 2011. The SkyHawks now carry a three-championship streak into this winter's state wrestling championships.
4. Marian (Omaha) girls swimming and divingSimply put, the Crusaders took home Class A crowns eight straight times beginning in 2000 and ending in 2007.
5. Lincoln Southeast boys swimming and divingThe Knights were dubbed Class A swimming and diving kings beginning in 1958-59 and won their final championship of the streak in 1964-65.
6. South Sioux City girls basketballThe Cardinals dominated the action on the hard court by winning 10 state championships in 11 seasons beginning in 1994-95. The South Sioux City girls won four straight state championships from 1995-98 and took home the top prize from 2000-05. A 54-42 loss to Ogallala in the championship game of the 1999 Class B state tournament is all that kept the Cardinals from winning 11 straight titles. South Sioux City added a championship in 2008.
7. Omaha Central boys basketballA year ago Omaha Central lost to eventual Class A champion Bellevue West in opening round action at the Nebraska State Basketball tournament, giving up its rite of passage in the season ending tournament. But before faltering to the Thunderbirds, the Eagles dominated action, winning state titles from 2006-08 and from 2010-13. Creighton Prep won the title in 2008-09 disallowing the Eagles the opportunity to win eight straight big school state championships. Omaha Central did not qualify for the state tournament in 2009.
8. Omaha Central boys wrestlingIt's been quite some time since Omaha Central has won a state wrestling title. But the Eagles were a dominating force in the late 30s through 1950. The Eagles won 10 state titles in 12 years beginning in 1939 when they won their first of four straight Class A state grappling championships. The Eagles also claimed titles in 1944-47 and earned back-to-back championships in 1949 and 1950.
9. (Tie) Wahoo boys basketball, Sandy Creek (Fairfield) girls basketballWahoo garnered quite a reputation for winning state championships in the late 80s through the late 90s, claiming eight state championships in 11 seasons. The same could be said for the Sandy Creek girls. In fact, Sandy Creek also took home the hardware in eight of 11 seasons. Wahoo won its first of four straight titles in 1988, and then added state titles in 1993, 1994, 1996 and 1998. Sandy Creek, on the other hand, captured a Class C1 state title in 1992 and Class C2 state championships in 1991, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001.
10. Omaha Westside girls swimming and divingMuch like their male counterparts, the Omaha Westside girls swimming and diving squad has been rather dominating at times. Twice the Warriors won five straight state championships and put together a string of 10 championships in 14 seasons. Westside claimed state titles from 1975-79 and 1984-88.
