Video: High School Softball Player Does Flip Before Showing Off Bat TricksIn the early stages of the New Mexico high school softball season, a pair of juniors are dominating in hitting and pitching, respectively.
Centerfielder Maya Contreras of West Mesa is the No. 1 hitter with an amazing .691 average. The 5-foot-8 speedster also ranks second in runs batted in with 30.
"The way she is hitting right now, she is Division I," coach Joe Chavez said. "The last four games she was unbelievable. She didn't make an out. She hit two home runs and hit for the cycle. She batted 16 times with 15 hits and one walk. She scored 12 runs, had five doubles and two triples."
Nine of the top 10 hitters are underclassmen, while five of the top six RBI leaders also are underclassmen. Below the state offensive leaders, check out the top pitchers as well.
