Justin Fields of
Harrison (Kennesaw, Ga.) was named
247Sports' new No. 1 player in the 2018 Class by Barton Simmons Monday afternoon.
The 6-foot-3, 220-pound gunslinger proved he was in a league of his own last weekend with arguably the best performance The Opening has ever had from a quarterback in its seven-year history. Fields was named the winner of the Elite 11 competition, his 7x7 team won the title, he completed 72 percent of his passes and threw 16 touchdowns with no interceptions.
But he's still hungry.
"Nothing has really changed for me," Fields told MaxPreps. "I'm still the same person. But it feels good, I guess you can say."
Fields overtook fellow Georgia product
Trevor Lawrence of
Cartersville for the No. 1 spot. The country's top-rated dual-threat QB also runs a blazing 4.51 40-yard dash. He passed for 2,253 yards, rushed for 977 and accounted for 32 TDs in leading Harrison to the second round of the Georgia Class 6A state playoffs last fall.
He holds 40 offers and decommitted from Penn State in early June. Florida, Florida State and Georgia are the main suitors vying for his services.
It's also worth mentioning that
Patrick Surtain II,
Justin Shorter,
Jordyn Adams,
Jamaree Salyer,
Jeremy Ruckert and
Talanoa Hufanga were the six new prospects to join the elite group of 14 five-stars.
