With state baseball playoffs beginning in the southern states and the spring season just getting underway in some northeastern states, it's time to increase the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National High School Baseball Rankings to 50 teams beginning this week.
Shawnee remains the No. 1 team in the nation after another strong week that included four wins and upped Shawnee's win streak to 43 games in a row.
Meanwhile, preseason No. 1 Archbishop McCarthy suffered its second loss of the season and dropped five places to eighth. Buchanan, the No. 1 team two weeks ago, rose back to No. 2 after losses by Archbishop McCarthy and previous No. 2 George Ranch.
Huntington Beach also had a big week, winning the Boras Classic South tournament. The tourney championship allowed the Oilers to rise from No. 6 to No. 4.
State playoffs have begun in Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and South Carolina and will get underway in Florida later this week.
Expanding to 50 teams allows for teams from the midwest and northeast to make their debut in the Xcellent 50. Jackson is the highest debuting team from that region, coming in at No. 24. Jackson is ranked No. 1 in Ohio Division I.
