Video: Klay Thompson Ultimate HighlightsFormer Santa Margarita star had high school jersey retired Friday afternoon.
Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) has sent athletes on to the NBA, NFL, Major League Baseball and even the Olympics, but none of them have ever had their jersey retired by the school – until now.
Klay Thompson, a two-time NBA All-Star and member of the Golden State Warriors' 2015 championship team, attended a school-wide assembly at Santa Margarita on Friday to have his No. 1 jersey officially retired by the school.
According to school officials, Thompson becomes the first athlete at Santa Margarita to have his jersey officially retired, beating out former Eagles like Carson Palmer (NFL), Amy Rodriguez (gold medal-winning soccer player) and Brian Finneran (NFL) for the honor.
Thompson, a No. 11 overall pick of the Warriors in the 2011 NBA draft, led Santa Margarita to a 30-5 record and a Division III state championship in 2008. He averaged 18 points a game that season, but posted 39 points (including a state finals record seven 3-pointers) in the state championship game.

Klay Thompson is honored Friday at Santa Margarita. Thompson’s father Mychal (right) – who spent over a decade in the NBA – looks on.
