The Miramonte Matadors headed to face the Dougherty Valley Wildcats Friday, November 6 to break their two game losing streak. With the Matadors two offensive and defensives starts John Coupin and James King sidelined due to injury the Mats really had to battle for this one.
The Wildcats are a fairly new team in DFAL with their first graduating class coming this year. Known for being an easy win for opponents the Wildcats battled and held their ground quite well this night.
Ross Anderson was the star of this game scoring both touchdowns in a 14-7 Matadors wins. Anderson rushed for 116 yards and went 5 for 11 with 61 yards in the air. This is the best throwing performance the Mats have had since benching junior quarterback Brett Collins in the beginning of league play.
The game was tied at 7-7 going into the fourth quarter when Anderson ran for 33 yards to Dougherty’s 19-yard line to start the winning drive. After five plays Anderson rushed for an 8 yard run which ended up being the game winning play. Notable players for the Matadors were Kevin Paulson who ran for 43 yards on 12 carries and P.J. Gabrielli who picked up 27 yards on seven carries.
The Wildcats couldn’t get much going as an offensive unit. The Mats defense managed to have them go three and out most of the game and got there only touchdown on a 12 play opening drive 1 yard rushing touchdown by Edsel Snoody. Lucas Raventos led the Wildcats in rushing with 60 yards on 10 carries but the Wildcats did not get to the redzone the rest of the game as both the teams struggled to get the ball moving, making this a low scoring game.
The Matadors play league leading Alhambra Bulldogs this week as the Wildcats face Dublin.
