High school baseball rankings: Stoneman Douglas wins NHSI, climbs to No. 3 in MaxPreps Top 25

The National High School Invitational had a profound effect on this week's MaxPreps Top 25 high school baseball rankings, as four teams dropped out and tournament champion Stoneman Douglas (Parkland, Fla.) jumped to No. 3.

The Eagles ended the reign of three-time NHSI champion Orange Lutheran in the semifinals. The Lancers had won three straight NHSI championships (2017-19) and had not lost a game in the tournament since 2014. Orange Lutheran had won 15 straight tournament games, including two in 2022, before falling to Stoneman Douglas, 11-0. The loss was also the most lopsided loss for a Lancers team since a 13-2 loss to Mira Costa on April 4, 2011.

The Eagles edged St. John's Country Day (Orange Park, Fla.) 5-3 in the finals and zoomed from No. 13 to No. 3 with the tournament title. With two losses, Stoneman Douglas is still ranked behind Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.), which is 20-0, and St. Mary's Prep (Orchard Lake, Mich.), which is 7-0.

Meanwhile previous No. 2 Buford (Ga.) dropped out of the MaxPreps Top 25 after going 0-3 in the NHSI. The First Academy (Orlando, Fla.) also dropped out after a pair of losses, as did Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.). Others leaving the rankings this week included Jenks (Okla.), Allatoona (Acworth, Ga.) and Teurlings Catholic (Lafayette, La.).

Among the newcomers to the rankings this week are Buchanan (Clovis, Calif.) and Stockdale (Bakersfield, Calif.), ranked Nos. 1 and 2 in the MaxPreps NorCal baseball rankings. Stockdale is the favorite in the Northern California Boras Classic this week in Sacramento.

Dropped out: No. 2 Buford (Ga.), No. 11 Jenks (Okla.), The First Academy (Orlando, Fla.), No. 15 Allatoona (Acworth, Ga.), No. 20 Teurlings Catholic (Lafayette, La.), No. 22 Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.).

Coaching Milestone: Glenn Cecchini of Barbe captured his 1,000th career win with a 14-2 victory over Acadiana. He is believed to be the 46th high school coach to win 1,000 or more games.

Best game: Barbe 3, Comeaux 1. Cecchini got win No. 1,001 when Donny Sandifer hit a two-run walk-off home run.

Player of the Week: Angelo Luna, St. Laurence. The Vikings joined the rankings this week in large part due to Luna, who had a double and a triple in one game and a double, triple and home run in another game to lift St. Laurence to a 13-0 record.

Games to watch: St. Mary's Prep vs. Brother Rice (Bloomfield Hills). The Eaglets take on one of the top Division 1 powers in Michigan this week in yet another threat to their No. 1 national ranking.

Streaks: Silo (Okla.) raised its win streak to 43 games, including 14 this year. White River Valley (Vt.), which starts its season this week, has the second longest streak at 35 wins in a row.
