North Shore (Houston) completed a run to its first UIL Class 5A state boys basketball title, knocking off DeSoto and Judson (Converse), to earn the top spot in the final MaxPreps Texas Top 25 ranking of the 2013-2014 season.
The Mustangs (35-3) created havoc with their defensive quickness, leading to 26 turnovers in Friday's 48-45 state semifinal victory over DeSoto and 18 in a 57-45 triumph over former No. 1 Judson in the championship game Saturday night at the University of Texas' Erwin Center in Austin.
In its two state tournament games, the undersized Mustangs of coach David Green Jr. owned a 44-15 edge in turnovers, leading to 44 points. In both games, the Mustangs gave up several inches in height to their opponents. The tallest player on North Shore's roster is 6-5 junior Jarrey Foster.
Foster led his team in tournament points (28) and rebounds (21).
North Shore, which made previous trips to the state tournament in 1991 and 1997, finished the season with a 17-game winning streak.

The Knights had a tougher time in a 60-56 semifinal win over Beaumont Central. Kimball, which seems to peak at the right time, increased its state championship title number to six.
Knights senior guard Jawun Evans scored 39 state tournament points.
Madison (Dallas) captured its second consecutive Class 3A crown with an 82-70 victory over Yates (Houston) in its championship game. Junior guard Admon Gilder had 51 points and 27 rebounds for the weekend.

With 6-5 junior
Jarrey Foster leading the way with 16 points and 10 rebounds, the Mustangs defeated Judson (Converse) 57-45 in the Class 5A championship game Saturday night at the University of Texas' Erwin Center in Austin. Foster was named the game MVP. Another junior,
Kerwin Roach, had 15 points. North Shore reached the title game with a 48-45 semifinal victory over DeSoto, with Foster accounting for 12 points and 11 rebounds.
2. DeSoto 31-4 (2)
The Eagles couldn't overcome 26 turnovers in a 48-45 loss to North Shore (Houston) in a state semifinal. Baylor signee
T.J. Maston, nephew of 15-year NBA veteran Tony Battie, led DeSoto with 11 points and 10 rebounds. The defeat was only the Eagles' second of the season to a Texas school.
3. Judson (Converse) 37-2 (1)
Judson was outscored 40-16 in the paint and 22-2 in points off turnovers in a 57-45 loss to North Shore (Houston) in the Class 5A championship game.
David Wacker, a 6-9 senior and son of head coach Mike Wacker, led Judson with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Rockets reached the title game with a 52-41 semifinal victory over Allen as 6-2 junior
Tony Allen led with 18 points.
4. Fort Bend Bush (Richmond) 30-6 (4)
The Broncos were eliminated in the Class 5A Region III title game by North Shore (Houston) 60-58.
5. Cypress Woods (Cypress) 27-6 (15)
The Wildcats lost a 60-59 heart-breaker to Fort Bend Bush (Missouri City) in a Class 5A Region III semifinal.
6. Manvel 30-5 (6)
The Mavericks saw a strong campaign come to an end in a Class 5A Region III quarterfinal loss to North Shore (Houston) 71-64.
7. Allen 27-9 (5)
The Eagles' post-season run ended in a 52-41 state semifinal loss to Judson (Converse), despite 16 points and 12 rebounds from 6-8 senior

8. Kimball (Dallas) 25-7 (12)

The Knights finished off their third Class 4A state championship in four years with a 52-37 triumph over Amarillo in the title game. Junior
Jawun Evans led Kimball with 16 points, four assists and four steals.
Trent Brinkley, a 6-6 senior, had 15 points. Evans, a 6-0 guard, registered 23 points in a 60-56 semifinal victory over Beaumont Central.
9. Beaumont Central 31-5 (13)
The Jaguars gave Kimball (Dallas) a scare in the Class 4A state semifinal before falling 60-56.
Nijal Pearson, a 6-4 sophomore, led Central with 23 points and nine rebounds.
10. Lancaster 31-5 (14)
The Tigers season ended in a 66-62 loss to Kimball (Dallas) in the Class 4A Region II title game.
11. Madison (Dallas) 30-3 (9)
The Trojans completed back-to-back Class 3A state titles with an 82-70 championship game victory over Yates (Houston).
Admon Gilder, a 6-4 junior guard, led the Trojans with 22 points and 16 rebounds while senior guard
Cameron Bryant had 19 points and 10 rebounds. In a 77-62 semifinal victory over Houston (San Antonio) Gilder tallied 29 points and 11 rebounds.
12. Bowie (Arlington) 28-6 (10)
The Vols lost 59-51 to DeSoto in the 5A Region I title game.
13. Churchill (San Antonio) 31-4 (7)
The Chargers' season ended in a 54-43 loss to Judson (Converse) in a Class 5A Region IV quarterfinal.
14. Atascocita (Humble) 29-7 (8)
Elimination came in a Class 5A Region II title game loss to Allen, 65-58.
15. Hebron (Carrollton) 26-8 (11)
The Hawks came up a basket short in a 42-40 Class 5A Region I semifinal loss to Bowie (Arlington).
16. Prestonwood Christian (Plano) 34-4 (17)
The Lions capped their third straight TAAPS 5A state championship with a 46-45 win over John Paul II (Plano).

The Lions, playing in their fifth state tournament in the last six years, came up short in an 82-70 loss to Madison (Dallas) in the Class 3A title game despite 20 points and eight rebounds from 6-7 senior
J.C. Washington. In an 86-79 semifinal win over previously unbeaten Kennedale,
Damion Lewis scored 22 points.
18. Tascosa (Amarillo) 25-2 (22)
The Rebels were eliminated 65-64 in an area playoff by Bowie (Arlington).
19. Plano West 23-7 (16)
The Wolves were eliminated in a Class 5A Region II quarterfinal by Berkner (Richardson) 75-73.
20. Cypress Lakes (Katy) 26-6 (24) The Spartans' season ended with a 75-52 loss to North Shore (Houston) in a 5A-III semifinal.
21. Memorial (Houston) 23-8 (NR)
The Titans were eliminated in a Class 5A Region III quarterfinal by Fort Bend Bush (Richmond) 37-35.
22. Friendswood 27-7 (NR)
The scrappy Mustangs took Beaumont Central to the wire in a 46-45 elimination loss in a 4A-III semifinal.
23. Fort Bend Travis (Richmond) 26-9 (NR)
The defending Class 5A state champs were tripped up by Manvel 61-59 in a Region III area playoff.
24. South Oak Cliff (Dallas) 26-6 (NR)
The Golden Bears were eliminated in a 4A-II semifinal by Lancaster, 82-77.
25. Fort Bend Marshall (Missouri City) 28-8 (NR)
The Buffaloes met elimination at the hands of Beaumont Central, 67-57, in the 4A-III title game.
Dropped out: No. 18 Harker Heights, No. 19 Marcus (Flower Mound), No. 20 Duncanville, No. 21 South Grand Prairie, No. 25 Andress (El Paso).
