The Mira Mesa Marauders, ranked No. 2 in the San Diego Union-Tribune poll, defeated the No.5 Vista Panthers, 38-14, in a non-league football game at Mira Mesa Friday, Sept. 1.ÿ

"We are proving to everybody that we want to be number one," Marauder senior Kyle Moore said.ÿ

Mira Mesa senior quarterback Kevin O'Mary passed for 176 yards, completed 10 of 13 attempts, and threw for two touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Markques Simas caught both touchdown passes, one of 36 yards, the other from 45 yards.

Simas and Moore also intercepted passes, two of four Vista turnovers. The other two were fumble recoveries for touchdowns by sophomore Eric Shorter and senior Josh Ollison.ÿ

"It was important to show that our defense is strong," Moore said.

Senior running back Jelani Burton added 119 yards on 24 carries for the Marauders, including a 28-yard touchdown run that capped the scoring.

"This was a good game and a good win," Burton said. "There are still a lot of things we have to work on."

The Panthers ran only two plays from scrimmage in the first period, but the second resulted in a 76-yard scoring pass from senior quarterback Loa Madon to junior Josh Herrera.ÿ

Junior running back Armani Taylor finished with 139 yards on 23 carries and added two touchdowns as the No.1 Oceanside Pirates picked apart the No.7 Helix Highlanders in La Mesa, 27-0.

Senior quarterback Donnie McKillop completed 8 of 14 passes for 119 yards and running back Myles Gilbert rushed for 117 yards as the No. 8 Poway Titans rallied for a 22-20 victory over the host Eastlake Titans. Senior running back Flynn Anderson finished with a team-high 76 yards on 18 carries for Eastlake.

Senior wide receiver Darrell Catchings had three pass receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown and also returned a kickoff for a touchdown as the No.10 Escondido Cougars dispatched the visiting Westview Wolverines, 52-7.
Junior quarterback Eric Fiege finished 7-of-13 for 122 yards and a score as the West Hills Wolfpack got a 26-6 home victory over the Coronado Islanders.ÿ Senior wide receiver Trevor Kolocheski caught five passes for 90 yards and a touchdown for West Hills.

Senior running back Lester Arnold scored on a 22-yard run and added two touchdown pass receptions from senior quarterback Lucas Shaw as the host Pt. Loma Pointers earned a lopsided 49-0 victory over the Morse Tigers. Playing only the first half, Arnold rushed for 81 yards on just five carries.ÿ Shaw (4 of 5 for 114 yards) added a one-yard quarterback keeper for six points as well.

Senior running back Corbin Cutshaw finished with 227 yards rushing and three touchdowns on just four carries and also returned a kickoff for a touchdown as the host Santa Fe Christian Eagles defeated the La Jolla Vikings, 34-14.

Wide receiver Martin Bayless had five catches for 92 yards and a touchdown as the host Castle Park Trojans defeated the Chula Vista Spartans, 28-14.

Senior safety Arlin Taylor returned two fumbles for touchdowns as the host Steele Canyon Cougars forged their way to a 20-13 victory over the Cathedral Catholic Dons.ÿ Taylor was also in on 10 tackles for Steele Canyon.ÿ Running back Frankie Martin led the way for the Dons with 62 yards on 10 carries.

Quarterback Evan Taylor was 6 for 10 passing for 105 yards and added 54 yards on the ground, including a touchdown run as the Mission Bay Buccaneers defeated the visiting Madison Warhawks, 34-14.

Senior quarterback Kiamie Brooks generated five touchdowns and 230 total yards as the El Cajon Valley Braves downed the Sweetwater Red Devils, 41-0, in National City.ÿ Brooks completed 16 of 28 passes for 175 yards and three touchdowns while adding another 55 yards rushing on nine carries, including another pair of second-half scores.

Senior wide receiver Jonathan Tippin hauled in seven passes for 123 yards and four touchdowns from senior quarterback Collin Taylor as the host Santana Sultans defeated the Patrick Henry Patriots, 35-21. Taylor finished 19 for 29 for 186 yards for Santana.

Junior quarterback Corey Trisby ran for four touchdowns and threw for 209 yards, leading an offense that rolled up 378 total yards as the Hoover Cardinals defeated the visiting Hilltop Lancers, 51-14.

Senior quarterback Chris Pizarro finished 5-for-18 passing for 131 yards and added two touchdowns on the ground as the host Montgomery Aztecs won, 31-3, over the University City Centurions.ÿ Junior wide receiver Juan Moriel finished with two catches for 75 yards for Montgomery.
