By Stephen SpiewakMaxPreps.comBellevue High School (Wash.) narrowly escaped tragedy Friday morning when a charter bus carrying 38 members of the football program overturned on Interstate 5, according to the
Bellevue Reporter.
No one was killed, but eight people were taken to the hospital. The most serious injury appears to be a concussion.
The Wolverines were on their way to the Tacoma Dome for a playoff game against Capital High School when the team bus swerved to avoid a ladder lost by an unknown vehicle.
“At this point, this is a criminal investigation,” Washington State Patrol Trooper Cliff Pratt told Joel Willits of the
Bellevue Reporter. “We’re looking for who lost the ladder. If it weren’t for that ladder, we’d be playing football right now.”
The game has been rescheduled for Monday at 7 p.m. at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood.
Bellevue is a football powerhouse in the state of Washington, capturing five out of the last seven 3A state titles. The Wolverines are the favorite in that classification again this year. They received national acclaim in 2004 when they ended De La Salle’s 151-game winning streak, becoming the first team to beat the Spartans in over a decade.
