Every season
Park Vista's (Lake Worth, Fla.) baseball team knows it is in for a fight to win a playoff spot, being in the toughest district in the county and around a highly talented area.
The Cobra's district (6A) features some of the area’s top teams including Seminole Ridge, Boca Raton , Palm Beach Central, Jupiter, Atlantic, Santaluces, Palm Beach Gardens and Royal Palm Beach.
Despite being the newest high school in Palm Beach County , Park Vista is making a name for themselves not only locally, but nationally. The Cobras have become a regional powerhouse walking all over their opponents by big margins to come into this season being rank 33rd in the state of Florida and 391 nationally according to Maxpreps.com.
“The team is very discipline, coach Larry Greenstien said. “They practice hard everyday and do everything I ask them to do. I believe we have a good chance to make it back to states behind the pitching of Brad Gero, catching of Peyton Walsh, strong hitting by Alec Saikal and a combination of young guys.”
Park Vista is coming off of a 24-8 record last season. The Cobras lost to Columbus (Miami) in the Class 6A state semi-final. With the lost of most of the team due to graduation, Park Vista will rely on strong pitching from seniors Gero ( 1.08 ERA and 52 strikeouts last season), who has signed with Daytona State University, and Curt Copeland, who signed with Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.
“I’m excited about this year, Gero said. “It’s my last year playing high school baseball and I’m going to make it count. It’s my goal to win states this year, and hopefully, I’ll leave with an accomplishment.”
Outstanding pitching at the top of the rotation and veteran catcher Walsh could be the recipe for Park Vista to return to state tournaments this year.
