Buckhorn (New Market, Ala.) senior Ben Smith set a national wrestling record over the weekend when he won the 132-pound Class 6A state title and finished the year with a 64-2 record.
That gave Smith 326 victories during his outstanding career, which started in seventh grade. The previous record of 324 wins had been set last year by Pete Baldwin of Life Academy (Kissimmee, Fla.) from 2004-2011.These records are kept by Wrestling USA Magazine, according to the Birmingham News.
The National Federation of State High School Associations recognizes only statistics achieved in grades 9-12. Its national record is 284. Smith compiled 220 wins during his final four years.
