Video: Tennessee Vols RB Jalen Hurd to have jersey retired at Beech High, TN
See high school highlights of the University of Tennessee running back when he was in high school.A shoulder injury robbed Jalen Hurd of more national glory during his senior season at
Beech (Hendersonville, Tenn.), a season in which he was named a MaxPreps Preseason All-American. But with what the current University of Tennessee running back accomplished in his other seasons, it makes perfect sense that his alma mater wants to honor him in perpetuity.
According to the Tennessean, Beech High will retire Hurd's number at its home opener, Aug. 28 against Rossview.
"It's awesome," Hurd told the newspaper. "We did a lot of great things there as a team. It means a lot. I love that school. It's an honor."
See high school photos and stats of HurdAs a prep, Hurd was a 2012-13 MaxPreps All-American as a junior after compiling 3,357 yards on 317 carries, a ridiculous per-game average of 239.8 yards. He also tallied 43 touchdowns and was Mr. Football in the state. Hurd also set a pair of state records that season for rushing yards and points scored in a season, plus he scored seven touchdowns in the state title game to help cap off a 15-0 season.
He's currently a rising star in the Southeastern Conference for the Volunteers. Hurd rushed for 899 yards on 190 carries as a freshman last season and he's predicted to burst onto the scene in a bigger way this season.
