Lone Peak (Highland, Utah) Lady Knights Volleyball Team defeated the Pleasant Grove Vikings in a grueling match in the 2010 Utah 5A State Tournament to be crowned the champions. The Knights have shown throughout the years that they are a frequent title contender. Making an appearance in the State Title game every one of the past eight years, and winning five them. This team is stacked with players that know the game and know what needs to be done to win matches. But the real question is…Can They Do It Again?
Being the top dog for many years can begin to weigh heavily on your shoulders. Expected to not make any mistakes and not lose another match, can be hard to deal with. The Lady Knights will have to learn how to cope with this kind of stress and just play to their greatest potential, which is the best in the state.
Lone Peak has the greatest coaching staff in the state of Utah, with Deanna Meyer as the Head Coach, Shara Park as the Assistant Coach, Misty Asay as the Sophmore Coach, and Jason Neubert, as the other Assistant Coach. Having a head coach that has as much experience and knowledge as Deanna Meyer for the game, is not found very often. "The dedication our head coach Deanna Meyer is what makes Lone Peak great. From the time the girls in our program are young they are learning the game of volleyball, and what makes it such a great sport. You won't find a more dedicated coach in the state, and it shows by the countless hours she puts in to this program", states Shara Park, Assistant Coach to Deanna Meyer.
Reining as the Utah 5A State Champions, The Lone Peak Knights, have proved that they have many strong points. Park states "The players on our 2011 team are smart. They have good court sense, and they understand the game of volleyball. They know how to hit shots; they know how to control the flow of the game. Don't get me wrong, we have some girls who can really put the ball away, but this year we also have some kids who know how to change it up and be unpredictable." This is what Deanna Meyer does as a coach. She does not only condition her players to their full potential but she educates them about the great sport of volleyball.
The Lone Peak Lady Knights will have to prove to head Coach Deanna Meyer that they are good enough to start for her team. They are going to have to prove themselves this week during tryouts to show that they deserve a starting position on this high caliber team. And then it will be time for the girls to defend their state title and see if they can win Lone Peak its' sixth Utah Volleyball State Championship trophy.
