The Katy Tigers high school football team had one of the best seasons in high school football this year. So outstanding was their performance that MaxPreps has ranked them the 6th best team in the nation. On Friday night, February 2nd, MaxPreps and the Army National Guard were on-site at a packed house during a Katy basketball game to present the MaxPreps Tour of Champions National Ranking Trophy. The presentation would be the last for the 2007 high school football season, but it certainly would not be the least important.
After finishing 13-1 for the 2006 season, Katy ran the table in 2007 winning all 16 of its games by comfortable margins including a 28-7 victory over Pflugerville, on Dec. 22 to capture the Texas 5A, Division II state championship. It was the fifth state title in the school’s history. Katy is one of 30 high schools nationwide being honored in the MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard.
“It’s an honor for the kids and our school,” said head coach Gary Joseph, whose teams have a combined record of 55-4 over his four seasons at Katy. “They’ve received a lot of recognition and this is another feather in their caps.”
Running back Andre Dean, named the Player of the Year in the state championship game, rushed for 2,491 yards and scored 26 touchdowns for the season. He rushed for 226 yards and one score in the title tilt. Senior quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell passed for 2,516 yards and 37 TDs with receivers Joey Fuda (30 catches for 610 yards and 11 TDs) and Terrance Avie (31 for 694 and four TDs) being his primary targets.
On behalf of the school, Coach Joseph was presented with an 18-inch tall bronze statue on a wood block base from Texas Army National Guard Sergeant Larry Olson during halftime of the boys’ varsity basketball game.
I had an outstanding time at Katy High School in Houston, Texas this year for the MaxPreps Trophy Presentation. I am sure Gary Joseph and the Katy Tigers will continue their dominance as the one of the best teams in the nation year in and year out. Go Tigers!
