4A Southwestern recap Nov. 7, 2012
Butler extended the longest winning streak in 4A Southwestern this week by beating West Forsyth, 49-0. The victory was the 11th in a row for the team.
Butler took down the Titans 49-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
Independence's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Kelvin Hopkins threw for 210 and three touchdowns and Workpeh Kofa had 86 yards receiving. On the ground Isiah Robinson chipped in 151 yards. Robinson helped Independence's passing attack out by catching three balls for 56 yards.
Independence's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Patriots feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Jason Connella has thrown for 1745 yards and 21 touchdowns this season, while Dequan Barnes has 50 catches for 979 yards. Robinson leads the league in rushing with 1549 yards.
The marquee game in the league this week will be the clash between Brian Hales' team and the Patriots. The Bulldogs enters the contest ranked first in the state, while Independence ranks 18th.
Bill Geiler's team's Barnes is a few successful plays short of surpassing 1,000 yards receiving this season. He needs only 21 receiving yards against Butler to hit that benchmark.
Two of the top units in 4A Southwestern will face off this week when the Patriots take on the Bulldogs. Independence's offense has racked up 448 points this season, earning them the top spot in the league, while Butler has allowed only 59 on the year.
The Patriots and Northwest Guilford played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with the Patriots eventually emerging with a 45-42 victory. Hopkins ran for 33 yards in the win.
