After winning the state title last year, the Tigers are once again stacked. Junior
Amani Wilborn (15.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 5 assists per game) and sophomore
Alona Johnson (14.5 points, 3.5 assists) were two of the team’s top three scorers last season. Johnson has already committed to play at Wisconsin and Wilborn is also getting looks from the home-state Badgers.
2. Oak Creek2012-13 record: 23-2
Head coach: Steve Hluchnik
The Knights return six of their top seven scorers from a season ago. The team’s two senior post players –
Tamya Sims (15 points, 8 rebounds; committed to Bradley University) and
Stephanie Kostowicz (15 points, 9 rebounds; committed to UW-Milwaukee) -- will be the go-to players.
3. Divine Savior Holy Angels (Milwaukee)2012-13 record: 21-4
Head coach: Scott Witt
The best player in the state of Wisconsin plays for DSHA,
Arike Ogunbowale. The reigning Gatorade Wisconsin Girls Basketball Player of the Year averaged 20.4 points, 9.6 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.1 steals per game as a sophomore. The Dashers have back four of their top six scorers from the team that ended its season to eventual state champion Milwaukee Riverside.
4. Mukwonago2012-13 record: 25-3, Division 1 state runner-up
Head coach: Rick Kolinski
After a solid run in the playoffs last season, the Indians have aspirations for a state title in 2013-14.
Bre Cera (10.7 points) is the only player back who averaged more than 4.5 points per game, so she’ll be relied on heavily.
Ellie Michalski is the only other returning starter.
5. Kimberly2012-13 record: 23-3
Head coach: Troy Cullen
The Papermakers were just one game shy of making it to state last season, and with five of their top six scorers back, state could be an attainable goal this year. Junior
Frankie Wurtz (15.3 points per game; first team All-State) is a do-everything point guard for Kimberly.
Jenna Smarzinski and
Steph Hetto both averaged more than six points per game in 2012-13.
