Seems there is no stopping the Oceanside Pirates. Oh sure, the faces, names and numbers change, but the results remain the same.
The front man in the Pirates’ attack is senior quarterback Jordan Wynn, who has accepted a scholarship to Colorado. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Wynn passed for a career high 356 yards and four touchdowns as Oceanside mauled Mira Mesa 42-24 on Friday, Sept. 19.
Governed by Wynn’s hot hand, top-ranked Oceanside (3-0) stretched its winning streak to 15 games. That ties the Pirates with San Marcos (1965-67) and Sweetwater (1972-73) for 10th place in CIF San Diego history, which began in 1960.
If the Pirates continue their victory parade without a blemish this season they could climb into fourth place with 25 wins in succession. Sweetwater (1983-85) holds the section record with 36 victories without interruption.
The way Wynn played, Oceanside, which has a bye this week, shouldn't fall out of step any time soon.
Hayvert’s the Buzz
Pint-size Lincoln running back Hayvert Williams, listed as 5-foot-8 on the Hornets’ roster, is – by his own admission – closer to 5-4. Size aside, the Hornets junior running back scored three touchdowns in the Hornets’ 40-6 victory over Morse on Sept. 20. A transfer from Crawford, Williams, who at 185 pounds is almost impossible to wrap up with one tackler, scored on 6, 41 and 1 yard runs.
State Sprinter Runs Wild
Steele Canyon’s Alex Perlin was the driving force behind the Cougars’ 36-18 victory over Grossmont Friday at Rancho San Diego. Perlin rushed for a school record 309 yards and 3 touchdowns on 32 carries to propel Steele Canyon to the victory. Perlin broke the rushing record of 264 yards set by Jamie Dale against Hilltop in 2006.
On the Mark
St. Augustine sophomore Evan Crower made the most of his second start at quarterback. The 6-foot-3 Crower completed 92 percent of his passes (23-for-25) in directing the Saints to 48-6 rout of Mater Dei on Friday, Sept. 19. Crowder’s totals included 270 yards and three touchdowns. He also scored one himself on a 4-yard run.

Brian Huynh's 42-yard field goal with no time remaining lifted the Rancho Bernardo Broncos to a 24-21 victory over Torrey Pines in a non-league football game Friday Sept. 19.
Top Performances
— Junior setter Kendall Polan of La Costa Canyon was selected the MVP of the Girls’ Durango Volleyball Classic in Las Vegas. Nev., after guiding the Mavericks to a championship sweep of Louisville (Ky.) Assumption 25-18, 25-21.
— Rancho Bernardo’s Molly Grabill won the sophomore race of the Mt. Carmel Cross-Country Invitational at Morley Field in Balboa Park. Her time of 15 minutes was the fastest girls time of the day. It also broke the Division I sophomore course record set 10 years earlier.
— Golfer Julia Thead of Francis Parker posted a 3-under 33 at Riverwalk to help the Lancers shoot their best round – 195 – of the season in a league win over The Bishop’s. It was the fourth time Thead was a medalist or co-medalist.
— Mt. Carmel’s Sam Warner paced the Sundevils with 60 assists in a five-set victory over Chaparral and a four-set win over Rancho Bernardo.
Looking Ahead
— The America’s Finest City / KAP 7 boys water polo tournament – a 32-team affair – will be held Friday and Saturday in San Diego. Elite teams from all over20the state are taking part, including Santa Ana Mater Dei, host Coronado, Harvard West of North Hollywood, Los Angeles Loyola, Poway, Valhalla, and Cathedral Catholic.
— La Jolla Beach City girls volleyball tournament will be held Friday (Sept. 26) and Saturday (Sept. 27).
— The Serra field hockey tournament will be held all day Saturday, Sept. 27.
Dickens Dealings
Grossmont played its first football game in 1920 against Sweetwater in the Foothillers’ center quad. Having attended Grossmont myself in the 1960s, the quad is a place to eat lunch and socialize. But football?
Nonetheless, the inaugural clash was held in a place that cannot be labeled a stadium, field or even a park. Spectators – the majority forced to stand – witnessed Sweetwater’s 27-0 victory.
Wide receiver Brett Etherton hauled in a Grossmont school record 13 catches for 172 yards and a touchdown against Steele Canyon on Friday, Sept. 19. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound junior broke the Foothillers’ previous record of 10 catches set by Scott Beatty against Monte Vista in 1981. Keep in mind that Grossmont kicked off its football program 88 years ago and did not score a single point in its inaugural four-game season. The Foothillers tallied only seven points in their first three games of the following season.
The Foothillers discovered the forward pass just about the time that color television became a staple. Although they’ve had some great quarterbacks such as 1980 NFL MVP Brian Sipe and Rose Bowl MVP Jeff Van Raaphorst, passing the football has never been predominant at Grossmont.
