Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school basketball. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2020-21 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence, in addition to local and state accolades.
Dionna Gray of
Huntington is the 2020-21 MaxPreps West Virginia High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year. In a shortened season, the 5-foot-4 junior point guard led the Highlanders to a 16-1 record and the Class AAAA state championship.
A transfer from Huntington St. Joseph Central, Gray averaged 17.2 points, 6.2 assists, 5.3 steals and 4.2 rebounds for her new team as a junior. She scored 52 points in three state tournament games, including 13 in the 58-49 championship win over Mountain State Athletic Conference rival Cabell Midland.
Gray is in position to reach 1,000 points for her career with a solid senior campaign and has helped guide Huntington and St. Joseph Central to a 61-6 record collectively. She has been part of state championship teams with both programs.
