Blue Hen Flight A Conference play got underway Saturday as The News Journal's No. 5-ranked Glasgow Dragons traveled to William Penn to renew a bitter rivalry.
The Dragons were fresh off a 24-0 rout of Dover a week ago and seemed to be back on track after a loss to highly-touted St. Mark’s in the season opener. Although the Colonials suffered a 21-0 shutout to Salesianum last week, William Penn downed the Dragons 26-16 and earned its first win of the season.
William Penn running back Brian Fields averaged nearly 10 yards per carry and ran for 220 yards and three touchdowns.
Fields put the first points on the board with a 20-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and helped set up a 5-yard touchdown reception by Joebree Harris-Turner in the second quarter to give William Penn a 13-0 advantage.
Glasgow quarterback Chris Cruz drove the Dragons down the field late in the first half, only to have a pass intercepted in the end zone by William Penn defensive back Lewis Toler to keep the score 13-0 at halftime.
The Colonial defense finally allowed the Dragons to reach the end zone when a roughing- the-passer penalty set up a touchdown run by Cruz in the third quarter to put the Dragons on the board at 13-6.
William Penn quarterback Calvin Butcher and Fields answered right back on the next drive, as the Colonials went up 20-6 behind a 3-yard touchdown run by Fields late in the third quarter, giving William Penn a 20-6 lead.
The Dragons would not go quietly and made it a one-possession game (20-14) when running back Malachi Freeman scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Fields had an answer for everything on this night, however, and ran for a 67-yard touchdown to ice the victory for the Colonials.
William Penn now sits at 1-2 and is undefeated in conference play at 1-0, while Glasgow falls to 1-2 and 0-1 in the conference.
Football: Riders Run Wild on Salesianum
Behind a 142-yard, four-touchdown performance by Caesar Rodney’s senior running back Duron Harmon, the Riders cruised to a 49-26 victory over Salesianum Friday night.
Salesianum entered the game ranked No. 3 by The News Journal.
Joe Babuca was the first to find the end zone as he rumbled for an 11-yard touchdown, giving CR a 6-0 lead early in the first quarter.
After the Rider defense forced the Sals to punt, Harmon torched the opposing defense on a 58-yard touchdown run on the next drive.
The Sals finally found the end zone on a 79-yard pass play from Breidy Breidenbach to Sean Cryan, but would not score again in the first half.
Daquan Harris and Harmon each rushed for touchdowns and the Riders entered halftime with a 35-7 halftime lead.
The Riders had out-gained the Sals in total yards 386-118 in the first half. Rodney is averaging 325 rushing yards per game.
Volleyball: Archmere Knocks Off Ursuline
Archmere freshman Patreece Spence tallied 19 kills as Archmere defeated defending state champion and No. 1-ranked Ursuline 20-25, 30-28, 25-20, 25-13 on Tuesday night.
Ursuline (2-2) played with confidence in the first game and battled off an Archmere (4-0) comeback to win 25-20.
The two highly-touted teams put on a show in the second game. After Archmere got out to a 22-16 lead, Ursuline fought back to eventually tie the game at 24. Neither team could gain a two-point advantage until Archmere’s Marissa Eppes struck a game-winning kill for the Auks to tie the match 1-1.
The Auks again got out to an early lead in the third game and were able to finish strong with a 25-20 win capped off by a kill from Alex Lyon.
Ursuline’s fate was sealed as Archmere cruised to a 9-1 lead in the fourth and final game, eventually winning the match 25-13.
