Unfortunately for the
Wasson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) girls basketball team, the varsity season is over just after it began.
School officials decided Wednesday to cancel the Thunderbirds' varsity season after only three games, contests in which the team was outscored 209-13. A lack of experienced varsity players hurt Wasson, which fielded a lineup that included only one senior, two juniors and eight freshmen. The Thunderbirds went 0-22 last season as well.
"The biggest reason is we've got a young group of girls that don't have the varsity skill," Wasson athletic director Jared Welch told
The Gazette.
The season will not be lost entirely, though, as the Thunderbirds will now play a junior varsity schedule instead. Per state association rules, the three upperclassmen could have chosen to play for another school since Wasson now does not have a varsity team, but Welch told the newspaper all have decided to remain with the Thunderbirds.
A decision on whether Wasson will return to varsity play next year will be made after the season.
"Right now, we're going to play through the season and reassess it for next year to see where we're at," Welch told The Gazette. "We're at the point where we've got to build some skill in these younger players."
