The Tour made its way back to Virginia to honor a very strong Phoebus football team. On a cold winter evening, close to 400 students and faculty gathered Tuesday night February 3rd to pay homage to the 2008 Phoebus Phantoms, who also captured another state championship. Mr. Johnson, Phoebus High’s Principal, introduced Tour veteran, Charlie Thompson of MaxPreps, who saluted the nationally ranked team as part of the MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard.
After Charlie talked about the team’s dominant on-field performance, he introduced Staff Sergeant Joe Frazier from the Virginia Army National Guard. With the crowd in high energy anticipating the acceptance of the Minuteman Trophy, a symbol of dedication, excellence and perseverance, Staff Sergeant Joe Frazier called on Coach Dee and presented him the coveted trophy to a thunderous applause. The players, coaches, and fans were on hand because they had finished #7 ranked from a pool of 15,000 high school football teams across the country.
Phoebus capped a perfect 15-0 season by beating Dinwiddie, 37-13, on Dec. 6 to claim the Group AAA Division 5 state championship – their second in three seasons and fourth in the last decade. The Phantoms defeated defending champion Stone Bridge in the semifinals. Phoebus was one of 30 high schools nationwide being honored on the fourth season of the MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard.
