Video: Payton Hackel's highlights vs. Pierce High School
See the Ord freshman in action.
Putting together a talent-heavy roster generally goes a long way toward producing deep postseason runs and the hardware that goes along with winning state championships. However, there are no guarantees.
Sometimes the hardware is attained simply because the champion gets hot at the right time, sneaks up on the rest of the field and steals the show.
While the usual hombres are once again favorites to win it all in Nebraska, so long as they survive the chaos that is Nebraska girls district basketball, MaxPreps is taking a look at those Cornhusker State teams that are hot at the moment. Some of the names on our Nebraska Top 10 girls basketball winning streaks post won't surprise our readers — but some may.
Mitchell and Ord are both unbeaten. But 25-0 Mitchell earns the top spot in this week's Top 10 after playing one more game than the Chanticleers. Class B powers Platteview and South Sioux City are both on 13-game winning streaks, while Bruning-Davenport/Shickley and Millard North tied for the No. 5 spot after winning 12 games in a row.
As teams get hot at season's end, they usually climb in the polls both locally and nationally. This week, however, not one member of our latest Cornhusker State Top 10 improved from Tuesday's MaxPreps National Rankings to Friday's.
Class C1's Ord and Class C2's Superior dropped 37 spots in MaxPreps' National Rankings, the lowest demotions of any of the Cornhusker State's schools in this week's Top 10. Platteview dropped just 45 spots to 1,535th. Millard South, Nebraska' No. 3 basketball team, earned the highest MaxPreps ranking of the members of this week's Top 10 at No. 467. Millard North (685th), Ord (911th) and Superior (962nd) all settled into MaxPreps' Top 1,000.
While Mitchell and Ord have both made it through regular season and district play undefeated, Superior and Pleasanton each made the Top 10 with one loss each. Thirteen girls basketball programs have won eight straight games, or more, to find a spot in our latest Nebraska Top 10 — and they are ready for the rip roaring postseason basketball fun coming their way at the end of February and hopefully into March.
On the first line we have provided the school, its won-loss record through Thursday and the winning streak the school is currently on. The second line lists each school's MaxPreps Ranking as of Friday — locally and nationally – and the third line informs the reader of which school the team last lost to and when.
