Video: Matt Bradley scores 72!
See the San Bernardino junior drop 72 on Rubidoux on Jan. 11.
With tournament season ending and league play ready to commence, several California boys and girls basketball players are putting up impressive numbers - numbers that also rank with national leaders.
For the boys, San Bernardino junior Matthew Bradley leads California in scoring with a 34.2 per night average, which is also ranked ninth nationally. Bradley dropped 72 on Jan. 11 in an 88-55 win over Rubidoux.
Lutheran's Josh Singh and Foothill Christian's Jaylen Hands are Nos. 2 and 3 in California, but in the top 20 in the nation in scoring. Note, the minimum number of games to qualify for California scoring leaders is nine games, while nationally, it's six games. There are two players - Ivy Academia freshman Elisha Cofield (34.3 ppg) and Baker junior Max Robledo (31.9 ppg) - who rank nationally but don't meet the games-played criteria for the California leaderboard.
Marcus Kuechle of Mercy in Red Bluff is third nationally, while Mendocino's Cody Call and Woodcreek's Jordan Brown are fifth and sixth, respectively, in the nation on the glass.
Point Loma's Dakarai Allen is seventh nationally in assists.
For the girls, Destiny Littlejohn of Bishop's leads not only California, but the nation with a whopping 50.2 points per game average. The Knights' senior has scored 904 points in 18 games this season. Shanaijah Davison of Pioneer (Woodland) is fourth nationally at 37.2 ppg, while Shyla Latone of Bonita Vista (Chula Vista) is seventh with a 34.5-point per game average.
Millikan's Tyler Frierson is third in the state with an 18.0-rebound per game average, but leads Golden State representatives on the national leaderboard based on different games played qualifications. Likewise with assists as Arroyo Valley's Hailey Vergara is fifth nationally 9.1 per game, but that is second in the state behind East Bakersfield's Marijane Jones's 9.7 dishes.
