According to Gridiron Now, it was a long time coming.
The former Florida, South Carolina and Washington Redskins coach made his first appearance at his alma mater since 1962 to take part in renaming the field Steve Spurrier Field at Kermit Tipton Stadium. Earlier this month the University of Florida renamed its field Steve Spurrier-Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
And let's not forget he was inducted into the National High School Hall of Fame earlier this year as well. That's quite a lot of honors for the coaching legend.
He was in town promoting his new book "Head Ball Coach" and will make an appearance Saturday at the Southeastern Conference showdown pitting No. 14 Tennessee and No. 19 Florida.
The 1966 Heisman Trophy winner spurned his home state's flagship university in favor of the Gators, and from that point on it was a fast lane to the history books away from his home state. But as seen Friday by MaxPreps pro photographer Chris Alley, it's never too late to return home.
