Sometimes it's not over even when it seems like it's over.
Wylie (Texas) found that out in its softball game last week when a celebration following the believed final out of the game turned into a three-run play for
McKinney North (McKinney, Texas) that turned victory into defeat.
The two teams were playing for the District 10-5A championship and each team entered the game with identical 11-2 records.
According to varsityviews.com, Wylie took the field in the bottom of the seventh inning with a four-run lead. However McKinney North whittled that lead down to two runs and loaded the bases with two outs.
Wylie only needed a force out at any base and the Pirates appeared to get that out when the shortstop scooped up a ground ball and threw to the second baseman covering the bag for the apparent final out of the game.
Celebration ensued with the Pirates gathering in a group near first base, hugging each other and throwing their gloves in the air.
Except that there was one small problem. The umpire called the runner safe at second base.
The McKinney North player on third base had already scored on the play to make it 6-5. Once the third base coach realized that the runner at second was not out, she sent the runner who had rounded third base home for the tying run.
In the frenzy that followed, a Wylie player picked up the ball that was laying near the pitching circle and threw wildly to home plate. Another problem: There was no Wylie player there to catch the ball.
With the ball rolling to the backstop, the runner from second raced around third base and tagged home plate for the wild and improbable 7-6 win.
