On Thursday, Jan. 22, MaxPreps traveled to Spartanburg to honor the
Spartanburg (S.C.) football team on a great season and national ranking. As part of the 10th Annual MaxPreps Football Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard, Spartanburg held a presentation in between the girls and boys basketball games to honor the football team as it was ranked No. 141 in the nation out of more than 16,000 football programs by MaxPreps.
Spartanburg bounced back from a 6-6 record in 2013 to a 12-3 record in 2014.
The Vikings captured their seventh state championship with a resounding 49-28 victory over York on Dec. 6.
Before MaxPreps and the South Carolina Army National Guard arrived that night to honor the Vikings, the team traveled to Columbia, S.C., where it was honored by the South Carolina House of Representatives. The players' enthusiasm and excitement were very evident. Not only were the Vikings one of the best teams in the state, but in the country as well.
Spartanburg athletic director Todd Staley opened the presentation by congratulating the team on its accomplishments. As Staley introduced the Tour of Champions portion of the presentation, the team gathered around, eager to receive the prestigious Army National Guard national ranking trophy. Sergeant Lee Hensen of the South Carolina Army National Guard presented Coach Miller and the team with the coveted trophy. The team also received a banner for its accomplishments.
The students and parents in attendance broke out in cheers and applause as coach Miller received the trophy. The team huddled around the coach and trophy, celebrating its success. After the presentation, the team gathered in the lobby for pictures and interviews.
Congratulations to the Spartanburg High School Vikings on their seventh state title and national ranking! We hope to see you on the Tour of Champions next year!
