Douglas (Minden) captured the 4A girls volleyball state title with a dominating 25-20, 25-9, 25-15 over
Green Valley (Henderson) at Bishop Manogue in Reno.
It is the first state title for the Tigers since 1998 and the second straight year that Green Valley finished as the runner-up.
"The girls really came out fast and hard," Douglas coach Suzi Townsell told the Nevada Appeal. "That's what we've been trying to do, but it hasn't happened the last few matches. They came out and really got in Green Valley's face (Saturday). I think it really changed things early on."
Douglas, which features 10 seniors, used a 6-2 spurt to break a 10-all tie in the first game and took control of the second game with an early 11-3 run. Gators outside hitter
Emma Johnson was held to eight kills after putting down 19 kills in a state semifinal victory over Bishop Manogue.
Nikki Drost led Green Valley with 11 kills in the title match.
"I think Douglas is a very well-prepared team and they're like a machine out there," Green Valley coach Erin Hill told Nevadapreps.com. "They were the better team and that's a well-earned state championship, and we congratulate them all the way."
Douglas swept Bishop Gorman 27-25, 25-23, 29-27 in the other state semifinal.
Truckee (Calif.) won its second straight 3A championship as
