On Friday January 28th the 6th Annual MaxPreps Football Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard landed at
Brookwood (Snellville, Ga.) High School in Snellville, Georgia, just north of Atlanta. Brookwood was celebrating its first football state championship in nearly 15 years and was extremely excited to host the Tour of Champions. Additionally, Brookwood was ranked #80 nationally among 15,000 schools according to the MaxPreps Freeman poll.
While driving up to the school, I first saw the football stadium, and immediately could see how seriously Brookwood High takes their football team. I was joined at Brookwood by Sergeant First Class Felica Hill from the Georgia Army National Guard and we set up a table with the Army National Guard national ranking trophy displayed prominently in the middle of the school's commons area. We were able to sit there for most of the day interacting with students and teachers as they came by to catch a glimpse of the coveted trophy. Coach Mark Crews and Athletic Director Mark Kimbro were both on hand and thanked us for coming out to honor the school.
After the lunch periods, the school transformed the commons area into a stage for us to present the team with the trophy. Shortly after school was dismissed, the room filled first with the school band, and then with the team and coaches. Lastly, hundreds of students came out to support their team. MaxPreps representative Mare'a Cobb spoke first and then Sergeant. Hill presented coach Crews with the Army National Guard national ranking trophy. The students and the band erupted in applause as the team passed the trophy around. One of the team members summed it up best when he told local media reporters, "it wasn't just an award for the team, but it was an award for the entire school."
Nicely done Brookwood and best wishes in 2011!
