Booker T. Washington (5-0) cut the deficit to five after junior quarterback Jeremiah Hay connected with Dwight Hopkins for a 43-yard touchdown pass. Despite being outgained by Northwestern in total offense (380-164), the Tornadoes’ defense helped fuel the win led by senior defensive end Lynden Trail.
Trail (6-foot-6, 210 pounds) was the catalyst for the Tornadoes on Saturday night and led the charge as the unit forced six turnovers. Trail, who totaled 77 tackles and 14 sacks last season, recorded two of the turnovers and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.
The standout defensive end, who verbally committed to the University of Florida shortly after the game, recovered two fumbles, returning one for a score and the other 75 yards to set up another. In the second quarter, Trail complemented Hopkins’ efforts and helped BTW take a 14-12 lead after returning his first fumble recovery 11 yards for a touchdown.
Bridgewater displayed some of his own heroics, and blazing speed, with a 58-yard touchdown run. The run, followed by a 2-point conversion, helped Northwestern regain the lead 20-14. But a 2-yard touchdown run by Hay gave BTW a 21-20 lead heading into halftime. After a 4-yard score by Eduardo Clements, Trail helped seal the win late in the third quarter.
The defensive end recovered his second fumble of the night and returned it 75 yards, setting up Clements' second score of the night. Clements, one of the nation’s top running backs, ran it in from 2 yards out and extended the margin to 35-20 with less than a minute left in the third.
