Video: Middle school team pulls off insane trick playThey start 'em young in Iowa when it comes to wild trick plays on the football field.
Oak Ridge Middle School in Marion unveiled the "Cannon" play last week and it definitely can cause people to scratch their heads and say, "What just happened?"
So let's review: The shotgun snap is handed off (maybe passed?) to a tight end who runs an end-around in front of the quarterback. As the tight end continues going, a defender tries to mess up the play and another gets the tight end by the ankles. The wide receiver who was supposed to get the initial lateral on the reverse backtracks, and the tight end tosses is back to him.
The receiver then tosses another lateral for another reverse, this one going to the wide receiver who had started outside the tight end who had started the play. Then that wide receiver throws a bomb to a teammate who had started in the running back spot but ended up wide open downfield, all by himself.
The pass gets completed and a defender makes a valiant effort to make a tackle, but it goes for a touchdown.
Get it?
Head coach and offensive coordinator Mike Geers said the kids named the play themselves, and he didn't plan on running it during the game. But the opposition tried a trick play earlier, so he decided he'd one-up them, because stuff like that keeps the game fun.
Mission accomplished on both ends.
And yes, that first part may have been a forward pass and not a handoff to the tight end - but for fun's sake, let's just say it was all on the up-and-up.
