Week 8 Lone Star of the Week
John Hubert, Waco Midway – In a 56-31 victory of then-No. 6 Ennis, Hubert rushed for 226 yards and seven touchdowns in the crucial 4A battle. Midway, which moved to 7-1 on the campaign, clinched a playoff berth from 16-4A.
Hubert scored three touchdowns to give Midway a 21-0 lead in the second quarter. After Ennis got back into the contest with two touchdowns, Hubert broke free on a 74-yard touchdown run before halftime to give Midway a 28-14 lead.
After a 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, Hubert put the game away with two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to complete the upset.

Honorable Mention
Hunter Arter, Cypress Springs – Cypress Springs downed Langham Creek 37-35 behind 319 passing yards and four total touchdowns from Arter. Arter completed 17-of-29 passes for two touchdowns and added a pair of 1-yard rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter for Cypress Springs.
Jordan Booty, Richardson – In a 50-20 victory over Molina, Booty scored on runs of 28, 5, and 50 yards to finish with 226 yards on 16 carries. The sophomore’s first score of the night kick-started a 26-point first quarter explosion for Richardson en route to a 37-14 halftime advantage.
Rex Burkhead, Plano – Burkhead helped Plano get back into the win column following last week’s loss to Allen with 306 total yards in a 38-31 win over McKinney Boyd. Burkhead rushed for 252 yards and three scores and added 54 yards receiving, including a 19-yard touchdown reception with 1:23 remaining to win the game for the Wildcats.
Albert Carrillo, Corpus Christi Ray – Carrillo rushed for 202 yards and three touchdowns in a 51-26 pounding of Moody. Carrillo’s touchdown runs of 1, 4, and 6 yards paced Ray to a 45-13 lead after three quarters of play. In the first quarter, Carrillo also returned an interception 78 yards for a touchdown to give Ray a 21-0 lead with six minutes remaining.
Travis Carter, Deer Park – Carter rushed for 284 yards and four touchdowns in a 44-3 victor over Sam Rayburn. Carter opened his night with a 1-yard plunge in the first quarter and later added scoring runs of 40, 4, and 9 yards in the win.
Princeton Collins, Westwood – Collins rushed for 203 yards on 25 carries in a 42-9 victory over McNeil. Collins also added 65 receiving yards on five receptions. Collins rushed for four touchdowns, coming from 14, 12, 5, and 9 yards to lead Westwood.
Theo Davis, Arlington Heights – In a 63-13 victory over South Hills, Davis rushed for 276 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries. Davis scored on runs of 11, 27, and 50 yards in the rout. Arlington Heights finished with 438 yards on the ground on 39 carries and moved to 6-2 on the season with the win.
Lucas Devilliers, Cypress Woods – In a 42-20 victory over Cy-Fair, Devilliers completed 17-of-26 passes for 357 yards and four touchdowns and also tacked on a rushing touchdown. Devilliers threw touchdown strikes to four different receivers, two of them in fewer than three minutes of the second quarter as Cy Woods broke away after a scoreless first quarter.
Jake Glover, Fort Worth Brewer – Glover completed 35-of-41 passes for 474 yards and three touchdowns in a 62-27 victory over Mineral Wells. Andrew Pichardo caught 11 passes for 152 yards from Glover, while Carder Auten caught 10 balls for 184 yards and three touchdowns. With the score tied at 14 after the first quarter, Brewer took over with 28 second quarter points.
Cody Green, Dayton – Green led Dayton to its fifth straight win by compiling five touchdowns in a 40-7 out of Galena Park. Green threw for 192 yards and three touchdowns, two of them going to Dayton playmaker A.J. Dugat. Green added 97 rushing yards and two more scores for the Broncos. In seven games, Green has thrown for 18 scores and has added 14 on the ground while Dugat has rolled up 14 total touchdowns this season.
Chauncey Harris, Converse Judson – Judson rolled to a 42-7 rout of San Antonio East Central behind 276 rushing yards and four touchdowns from Harris. Harris scored on runs of 39, 27, 9 and 14 yards, the first two coming in the second quarter as the Rockets broke a scoreless deadlock after the first quarter.
O.J. Hughes, Victoria Memorial – In a 33-28 loss to Corpus Christi King, Hughes still managed to turn in a huge performance. Hughes finished with 230 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries. Hughes scored on touchdown runs of 15 and 58 yards in a losing effort.
Jerry Lopez, Laredo Alexander – Lopez threw touchdown strikes like they were going out of style in a 51-6 win over Eagle Pass Winn. Lopez completed 25-of-44 of his passes for 441 yards and seven touchdowns, including four touchdown strikes in a 30-point second quarter for Alexander. Aldo Hernandez caught eight passes for 167 yards and three touchdowns, all three of his scoring grabs coming in the second quarter from 61, 11, and 39 yards.
Jerreal Minor, San Antonio O’Connor – Minor opened the 38-20 win over San Antonio Holmes with an 84-yard touchdown run with 7:05 left in the first quarter. When Minor was all said and done, he would score three touchdowns to go along with 213 yards on 18 carries. Minor’s third touchdown of the night came from 1-yard out to give O’Connor a convincing 28-0 halftime lead.
Richard Morrison, Royse City – Morrison nearly single-handedly led his team to an upset over 4A No. 3 Highland Park. Morrison threw for 291 yards and four touchdowns and added 209 yards rushing and two more touchdowns in the loss. Morrison threw for three touchdowns and added another on a 46-yard run to give his team a surprising 28-7 lead in the second quarter. Highland Park rallied with 39 unanswered points before Morrison nearly returned the favor with a comeback of his own.
Colton Palmer, Kerrville Tivy – Palmer led a 34-27 upset over 4A No. 9 Schertz Steele with 436 passing yards. Palmer scored the game-winning touchdown with 27 seconds remaining on a 4-yard touchdown run. Despite completing 30-of-36 passes – 15 going to Logan Vick for 206 yards – Palmer did not throw for a touchdown in the upset victory.
Adrian Phillips, Garland – The Owls clinched a playoff berth and remained unbeaten (9-0) with a 37-21 victory over North Garland. Phillips rushed for 185 yards and four touchdowns and added 170 yards on 13-of-20 through the air in the victory.
David Piland, Southlake Carroll – Piland – the junior quarterback replacing injured starter Kyle Padron – threw for 203 yards and four touchdowns in a 38-14 victory over Flower Mound. Piland added 174 yards on the ground, including an 11-yard touchdown run to cap-off the victory for the Dragons.
Austin Pugliese, Cypress Creek – In a 49-28 victory over Cypress Falls, Pugliese completed 26-of-37 passes for 444 yards and three touchdowns. Pugliese also added 106 rushing yards and a touchdown in the victory.
Taylor Ratcliff, Leander – In a 31-14 win over Georgetown, Ratcliff rolled to 230 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns. Trailing 7-0 after the first quarter, Ratcliff got Leander back into the game with a 44-yard touchdown run. Leander, which led 17-14 at halftime, got a 2-yard run from Ratcliff in the third quarter to extend its lead.
Sherard Ray, Odessa Permian – Ray rumbled for 273 yards and four touchdowns to lead unbeaten Permian to a 56-31 victory over Lubbock Coronado. Ray racked up 135 yards and two touchdowns in the third quarter alone as the Panthers pulled away from a 28-24 halftime advantage.
Ryan Swope, Austin Westlake – The Chaparrals evened their record at 4-4 thanks to another impressive display from Swope. Swope rushed for 217 yards and scored three first quarter touchdowns to lead Westlake to a 35-7 halftime lead in a 42-22 win over Anderson.
Jamal Turner, Arlington Sam Houston – In a 53-46 loss to Mansfield Summit, Turner rolled to 410 total yards despite the loss. Turner completed 33-of-54 passes for 298 yards and four touchdowns and picked up 112 rushing yards, including a 24-yard touchdown run.
Lewis Washington, Mansfield Summit – Washington was crucial in Summit’s shootout victory over Arlington Sam Houston. Washington rushed for 236 yards and four touchdowns on 15 carries in the 53-46 win. Washington scored the game-winning touchdown on a 48-yard run with seven minutes left. Washington also added a 52-yard punt return for a touchdown in the victory.
DeAndrew White, Galena Park North Shore – In a 49-3 win over Baytown Sterling, White caught four passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns. In a 21-point first quarter for the Mustangs, White reeled in a 66-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Alex Tillman. The two connected again later on a 63-yard touchdown strike in the third quarter as the Mustangs rolled to its 76th straight regular season win.
Scotty Young, Denton Ryan – Young completed 25-of-40 passes for 412 yards and seven touchdowns as Ryan lit up the board with a 66-43 victory over Wichita Falls. Young equaled the school-record for touchdown passes, which he set earlier this season. Bud Sasser caught eight passes for 174 yards and four touchdowns in the victory.
Lone Star Storylines
Wow! Highland Park Survives Morrison, Royse City
In a Texas shootout for the ages, Highland Park and Royse City combined for over 1,000 yards of offensive fireworks. Highland Park sealed the 46-43 win by converting a fourth-and-one from its own 29-yard line.
Royse City exploded to a 28-7 lead in the second quarter behind the stellar play of quarterback Richard Morrison. Morrison threw for three touchdowns and scored on a 46-yard touchdown run to give his team a shocking 21-point advantage.
The Scots stormed right back with 28 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 35-28 lead into halftime. Luke Woodley scored on a 9-yard run and Bryan Dickenson added a 19-yard scamper to bring the Scots to within seven.
Matt Bonano returned a punt 64 yards for a touchdown before Woodley hit Josh Francis on a 13-yard touchdown strike with 39 seconds remaining in the half to give Highland Park the lead.
In the third quarter, Highland Park made it 39 unanswered points behind another Woodley touchdown strike, this time to Austin Mai from 30 yards out. Bonano tacked on a 37-yard field goal to give Highland Park a 46-28 lead.
Morrison responded with a 59-yard touchdown run and then hit Devin Bryant for the second time in the contest from 19 yards out to bring Royse City back to within five points. Morrison completed a two-point conversion toss to B.J. Farrar, but that would be the last time Morrison would get a chance.
Morrison finished with 291 yards passing and four touchdowns while adding 209 yards on the ground and another two scores in a losing effort.
Dickenson led Highland Park with 201 yards on the ground while Woodley added 250 yards through the air as Highland Park survived to remain unbeaten.
Abilene Scores 214 Points in Three Games
Teams vying for 5A state championships in Texas should take note.
Abilene – ranked No. 3 according to the Associated Press – has kept the scoreboard operators busy as of late. The Eagles have scored 214 points in the past three games, an average of 71.3 points per contest. Abilene’s latest victim was Haltom by the count of 70-6.
Junior quarterback Stephen Warren threw for 274 yards and three touchdowns on 13-of-20 passing in the rout. Warren hit Prentice Ashford on touchdown strikes of 5 and 72 yards before finding sophomore Herschel Sims on a 49-yard dagger.
Zach Bass made four visits to the end zone, three of them coming in the first half as the Eagles took a commanding 42-6 halftime advantage. Bass added a fourth score in the second half from 2 yards out.
Sims rushed for 110 yards on three carries and scored on touchdown runs of 45 and 63 yards. Sims also caught three passes for 78 yards for the Eagles.
Tivy, Midway Enter 4A Associated Press Rankings
Kerrville Tivy and Waco Midway needed room in the Texas 4A Associated Press Top 10 in order to move into the mix. So, both teams decided to take matters into their own hands by knocking off teams in last week’s top 10.
Tivy – behind 436 passing yards from Colton Palmer – turned back Schertz Steele, 34-27. Palmer did not throw a touchdown pass despite his massive yardage output and hit wide receiver Logan Vick on 15 passes for 206 yards. Matt Ayala caught eight passes for 124 yards to pace the Antlers.
Quincy Kibbett rushed for 93 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Tivy rushing attack. Palmer scored his lone touchdown run with 27 seconds remaining in the game from 4 yards out to break a 27-27 tie.
Tivy moved into the Top 10 this week at No. 9, sporting a 7-1 mark overall and a 5-0 record in District 27-4A.
Midway got a huge boost from this week’s Lone Star of the Week, running back John Hubert. Hubert rushed for 226 yards and seven touchdowns in a 56-31 romp over previously-unbeaten Ennis.
Hubert has rushed for 1,315 yards and 22 touchdowns this season for the Panthers, who are also 7-1 overall and 5-0 in District 16-4A. Midway moved into the Top 10 this week at No. 10 heading into a crucial contest against Waco.
Texas 5A Associated Press Top 10 Recaps

1. Euless Trinity (8-0, 5-0, 1) – Defeated Grapevine, 45-0.
Top-ranked Euless Trinity stormed to a 42-0 halftime advantage and went into cruise control in the second half. Sophomore Tevin Williams rushed for 79 yards and two touchdowns in short work while Dontrayevous Robinson and Damien Hart tacked on rushing touchdowns for the Trojans. Denarius McGhee and Stetson Smith hooked up for a 24-yard touchdown pass to pace the offensive effort. Trinity’s defense was dominant. Zachary Regan returned a fumble 30 yards for a touchdown as one of four turnovers forced by Trinity. Trinity held Grapevine to 25 total yards, including minus-28 rushing on 15 carries.
2. Galena Park North Shore (6-0, 3-0, 2) – Defeated Baytown Sterling, 49-3.
Alex Tillman made the most of his six completions on 11 attempts, throwing for 258 yards and three touchdowns as the Mustangs won their 76th straight regular season game. Deaundre Jones rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns, while Tillman and Isaac Morris added scores on the ground for North Shore. Deandrew White caught four passes for 194 yards, including two touchdown grabs of 66 and 63 yards.
3. Abilene (8-0, 4-0, 3) – Defeated Haltom, 70-6.
4. Odessa Permian (8-0, 7-0, 5) – Defeated Lubbock Coronado, 56-31.
Clinging to a 28-24 halftime lead, the Panthers put away pesky Coronado with 21 points in the third quarter thanks to the running excellence of Sherard Ray. Ray rushed for 135 yards in the third quarter and scored touchdown runs of 62 and 4 yards en route to 273 yards and four scores in the victory. Trevor Adams led Permian to 577 total yards, including 292 yards of his own and a rushing touchdown.
5. Allen (7-1, 4-0, 5) – Defeated Dallas Jesuit, 49-17.
Allen quarterback Matt Brown totaled 200 yards of offense and three touchdowns. Brown rushed for 91 yards on 10 carries and scored two touchdowns on the ground while adding another through the air to Bradlee Waddell to open the scoring for the Eagles. Jeremiah Williams rushed for a pair of touchdowns and added a team-high 98 yards rushing on 11 carries. Eight different receivers caught passes for the Eagles. Allen's only loss of the season came to top-ranked Trinity.
6. The Woodlands (7-0, 3-0, 6) – Defeated Conroe, 34-10.
Daniel Lasco rushed for 129 yards on 11 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Highlanders to the victory, including a 78-yard scamper to get The Woodlands on the board in the second quarter. Quarterback Andy McCloud totaled 120 yards and two touchdowns, while Ryan Eastman scored a pair of rushing touchdowns on his two carries. Eastman also caught a touchdown strike from McCloud in the victory.
7. Copperas Cove (8-0, 5-0, 7) – Defeated Killeen Shoemaker, 31-14.
The Bulldawgs clinched at least a share of the 12-5A district crown in a hard-fought battle against a pesky Killeen Shoemaker team. Josh Boyce returned a kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter to break a 7-7 tie and later caught a 33-yard touchdown pass from Cody Vaughn in the fourth quarter. Vaughn threw for two touchdowns in the win, including a 29-yard touchdown pass to Josh Kasten as the Bulldawgs took a 24-7 halftime lead.
8. Pearland (7-0, 5-0, 8) – Defeated South Houston, 50-7.
Kasey Carrier rushed for four touchdowns to lead the Oilers to its seventh straight victory to start the season. Quarterback Trey Anderson completed 16-of-22 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns to pace Pearland. Kevin Miller led the receiving corps latching onto seven passes for 152 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter as Pearland claimed a 14-7 after trailing early. Carrier rushed for three touchdowns in the second quarter as Pearland seized control with 23 points to take a 39-7 halftime lead.
9. Southlake Carroll (6-1, 2-1, 9) – Defeated Flower Mound, 38-14.
In his second game replacing injured starter Kyle Padron, junior David Piland continued his impressive display. Piland threw for 203 yards and four touchdowns and added 174 rushing yards on 24 carries to lead the Dragons to their second straight District 6-5A win after dropping the opener. Ryan Walker caught seven passes for 107 yards and three touchdowns, while Josh Rake reeled in a third quarter touchdown pass from Piland.
10. Plano (8-1, 4-1, 10) – Defeated McKinney Boyd, 38-31.
Rex Burkhead rushed for 258 yards on 33 carries and three touchdowns and added another score on a reception from quarterback Carson Meger as the Wildcats got back in the win column. Meger finished with 279 passing yards and two touchdowns, including a 19-yard strike to Burkhead with 1:23 remaining to give Plano the victory. Holt Hoetger caught seven passes for 123 yards to pace the Wildcats, including a 30-yard touchdown reception.
Texas 4A Associated Press Top 10 Recaps
1. Lake Travis (8-0, 4-0, 1) – Idle
2. Everman (8-0, 5-0, 2) – Defeated Joshua, 41-7.
Ryan Smith rushed for a game-high 92 yards, while Devin Woods added 91 more and two touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs to their 23rd straight regular season win. Woods opened the scoring with a 57-yard touchdown run and followed it up with a 3-yard effort in the first quarter as Everman took commanding 20-0 lead. Everman’s defense held Joshua to minus-14 rushing yards on 21 carries in the win.
3. Dallas Highland Park (7-0, 4-0, 3) – Defeated Royse City, 46-43.
4. Aledo (8-0, 5-0, 4) – Defeated Springtown, 63-7.
Aledo scored 28 points apiece in the second and third quarters and rolled to its eighth straight win to start the season. Aledo scored three defensive touchdowns on the night; two on interception returns from Rylan Riney and Kyle Bottom and a 20-yard fumble return from Adam Kuntz. Four different Aledo runners scored first half touchdowns, while Johnathan Gray led the effort with two second half touchdowns to go along with his first half scoring run.
5. Longview (7-2, 5-0, 5) – Defeated Hallsville, 21-7.
In one of the most intense rivalry battles in the state, Longview remained unbeaten in district play with a win over its arch-nemesis. Tyler McCray rushed for 163 yards on 12 carries to lead the Lobos, putting him over 1,000 yards for the season. Longview – which claimed its 24th straight district victory – got two rushing scores from McCray, including a 40-yard run in the fourth quarter to ice the game. Quarterback Aaron Johnson added 83 yards on the ground for Longview and extended the Lobo lead to 14-0 with a 15-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
6. Dallas Carter (8-0, 5-0, 7) – Defeated Dallas Pinkston, 62-0.
It was another emphatic rushing display for the Cowboys, totaling 322 yards on 47 carries. Quarterback Jarvis Phillips, however, had his best aerial performance of the season by completing 11-of-15 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns. Terrance Brown rushed for a team-high 76 yards and two touchdowns. Phillips added a touchdown run of his own in the victory. Demardrick Gary caught three passes for 82 yards, including a 45-yard scoring strike from Phillips.
7. Wolfforth Frenship (8-0, 3-0, 10) – Defeated Plainview, 20-17.
Tyler Lloyd and Lance Ratliff needed to be telepathic in a rivalry game against Plainview. Lloyd and Ratcliff hooked up for three touchdowns through the air as Frenship remained unbeaten. In the first quarter, Lloyd hit Ratliff on a 9-yard touchdown pass to give Frenship a 7-3 lead. In the second quarter, the two combined on a 25-yard touchdown strike 4:29 before halftime to put the Tigers in front again, 13-10. In the third quarter, Lloyd and Ratliff struck on a 61-yard touchdown pass to give the Tigers a 10-point advantage.
8. Port Lavaca Calhoun (6-1, 4-1, 8) – Defeated Beeville Jones, 30-27.
Despite losing the battle of total yards by over 200 to Beeville Jones, the Sandcrabs prevailed behind two rushing touchdowns from Sterling Jones. Jones rumbled for a game-high 134 yards on 26 carries, including touchdown runs of 24 and 10 yards in the first half. With the score tied at 27, quarterback James Ezzell completed a fourth quarter comeback with a 4-yard touchdown run with 4:23 remaining. Daylan Bubenik tied the score just over two minutes earlier with a 73-yard punt return for a touchdown to set up Ezzell’s game-winning score.
9. Kerrville Tivy (7-1, 5-0, NR) – Defeated Schertz Steele, 34-27.
10. Waco Midway (7-1, 5-0, NR) – Defeated Ennis, 56-31.
