Scoring a hat trick is a memorable day for most soccer players. Kevin Hubbell did it five times in one game — and still had another goal to spare.
The
Benzie Central (Benzonia, Mich.) standout's 16-goal performance in 2021 is among the remarkable achievements featured in the MaxPreps National High School Soccer Record Book. With 770 entries across 13 individual categories, the collection recognizes prolific scorers, creative playmakers and goalkeepers who made opponents work for every goal.
Justin Loveland of
Matthews Christian Academy (Matthews, N.C.) leads the career scoring list with 236 goals across six varsity seasons. His biggest contribution came in 2023 when he scored 103 goals, also the highest single-season total listed. Career categories include all varsity seasons, allowing players who competed before ninth grade to receive credit for those performances.
Few players appear as prominently across the scoring categories as David Russell of
Weatherly (Pa.). Russell finished with 203 career goals, including 94 in 2002. He also scored 13 goals in a match that season and recorded seven consecutive games with a hat trick.
Michael Richardson of
Surry Central (Dobson, N.C.) provides another example of sustained scoring excellence. His 205 career goals included seasons of 92 and 87, both among the five highest totals listed.
Fleetwood (Pa.) standout Troy Snyder combined finishing and distribution, collecting 208 career goals and 117 assists.
The playmakers have their own place in the spotlight. Cory Morgan of
Hickory (N.C.) and Kelby Phillips of
Springfield (Ill.) share the career assists lead with 163. Reece Gery of
Rosewood (Goldsboro, N.C.) appears on the career, season and single-game assists lists with totals of 145, 59 and nine, respectively.
Goalkeepers supply equally impressive numbers. Conner McCoy of
Alcona (Lincoln, Mich.) tops the career saves list with 1,280. Lucas Mora of
Imperial (Calif.) follows with 1,255 and holds the highest listed season total with 590. Ralph Zitzman of
Christian Brothers College (St. Louis, Mo.) is credited with 30 shutouts in the 1970–71 season.
The record book draws from the National Federation of State High School Associations, state association and CIF section record books, Sheldon Shealer's historical compilations, coaches association records and independent collections. Research also includes MaxPreps fall, winter and spring leaderboards, player profiles and individual game logs.
