The high school football season in Colorado came to a close over the weekend with Cherry Creek beating Valor Christian 21-0 in the Class 5A state championship game. The shutout victory helped propel the Eagles to the No. 1 ranking in the final MaxPreps Colorado Top 25.
Cherry Creek was led all year by
Christian Hammond, who completed 135-of-203 passes for 2,025 yards and 18 touchdowns en route to a 12-2 record. The 6-foot-2, 170-pound signal-caller also carried the ball 83 times for 223 yards and an additional six scores.
Having scored 445 points this fall, the Bruins averaged more than 31 points a game after reaching 40 points or more five times. Defensively, Cherry Creek gave up just 133 points, held its opposition to 10 points or less eight times and posted three shutouts.
Led by MaxPreps Colorado Player of the Year Gavin Sawchuk, who ran for more than 2,000 yards as a senior, Valor Christian lost to Cherry Creek in the Class 5A state title contest and finishes No. 2. Class 5A semifinalist Legend, meanwhile, finishes third in 2021.
