Video: Beautiful ocean campusTake in the palm trees, the gentle Southern California sunshine and of course the waves crashing on the beach in the distance. Surround yourself in the Spanish Revival architecture and marvel at the athletic facilities.
You can do all of that on foot at
Army-Navy (Carlsbad, Calif.) and enjoy the experience. But we're taking it up a level - or more accurately, hundreds of feet.
MaxPreps teamed with Aerial Affair to capture drone footage of the beautiful campus at Army and Navy Academy, located about 35 miles north of downtown San Diego. Take a tour in the video above, and marvel in the grandeur of life at what likely is the closest high school campus to a beach in California.
The school's Duffield Sports Center opened in spring of 2013 with renovations adding artificial turf, a 783-seat stadium and a gymnasium with a balcony that overlooks the stadium. It all totaled a little more than $11 million and replaced a gym that been in use since 1936, when the school moved from San Diego to its current location, and a clumpy grass field.
Army-Navy has been in existence since 1910 and serves about 300 boys (grades 7-12) who come from over 20 countries and 14 states.
Baseball, lacrosse, soccer and football are played on Maffucci Field, honoring John Maffucci, a former
athletic director who the San Diego Union-Tribune said likely coached
every sport at the school at one time or another. Tennis courts and a pool support other sports teams as well, but the main draw has to be the home venue for the surf team - a private beach along the Pacific Ocean.
Soak it all in and explore Army-Navy by drone. And just when you think you can't be jealous enough, think about this: surfing is a winter sport at the school.
