Bryce Young, who announced his intentions to transfer to the Orange County powerhouse from Cathedral (Los Angeles).
Young threw for 3,431 yards and 41 touchdowns while running for nearly 300 and eight more scores this fall at Cathedral, leading the Phantoms to a 10-2 record. He threw just three interceptions and earned first team MaxPreps Sophomore All-American honors announced earlier this week.
"The decision to leave Cathedral was very difficult," Young told MaxPreps. "I enjoyed an amazing two seasons there and I am going to miss all my teammates, coaches and friends. After a lot of prayer and discussion with my family I believe that transferring to Mater Dei is the best decision for me."
Despite the loss of Daniels and a star-studded senior class, expectations will remain sky high at Mater Dei with the addition of Young and fellow underclass All-Americans
Bru McCoy,
Mase Funa,
Darion Green-Warren,
Elias Ricks, and
Myles Murao.
The move also adds another wrinkle to the rivalry between Mater Dei and
St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.), who have the top two quarterbacks in Southern California from the Class of 2020.
After a highly-productive sophomore season at Cathedral, Bryce Young will be joining forces with high school football's new national champs.
