Friday roundup: Katy, Trinty win; Dwyer falls: Aledo's win streak snapped

Katy (Texas) High School's defense is almost always stingy. When the Tigers click on offense, it's an unbeatable combination.

That was the case on Friday, as the the 11th-ranked Tigers excelled on both sides of the ball, downing North Shore 34-6.

After his team took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, senior quarterback Brooks Haack took over, scoring on a 10-yard touchdown run followed by a 24-yard scoring strike to receiver Jordan Thompson.

The Tigers' defense allowed just 38 first-half yards and then Haack was at it again, scoring an a 1-yard sneak in the third quarter to make it 24-0. Haack and Thompson hooked up again, this time on a 38-yard touchdown, making it 31-0.

A late fourth-quarter touchdown from North Shore prevented the shutout.

Miami Central stuns No. 16 Dwyer
Central (Miami, Fla.) looked like it hasn't lost a step from last season in its 33-14 victory over Dwyer (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) in the team's preseason kickoff classic.

The defending 6A state champion Rockets took a 10-7 lead into the locker room thanks to a 52-yard field goal and a touchdown run by sophomore speedster Joe Yearby.

Central extended the lead to 26-7 after the third quarter, as the Panthers, led by new quarterback Faton Bauta, struggled offensively.

However, Bauta turned it around in the fourth, finding sophomore Clint Stephens for a 43-yard touchdown with 6:27 remaining.

Central put the game out of reach with another touchdown in the fourth quarter, making the score 33-14.

According to the Palm Beach Post's Matt Porter, Dwyer's offensive line allowed five sacks in the second half.

Stephenville shocks No. 20 Aledo
Aledo's 29-game winning streak was snapped at the hands of Stephenville (Texas), which pulled off a 48-47 upset.

Aledo (Texas) scored with 1:26 left to narrow the score to 48-47. In a bold decision, Bearcats head coach Tim Buchanan attempted a two-point conversion, but star running back Johnathan Gray was stopped short of the end zone.

Aledo eventually got the ball back and drove all the way down field, but an 18-yard field goal with no time remaining was blocked by Preston Brown.

Gray finished with 219 yards rushing and four touchdowns according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. But it couldn't overcome the large efforts by Stephensville quarterback Tyler Jones who threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns.

Stephensville fought back from deficits of 20-3 and 34-17.

No. 19 Trinity unloads 66 against Montgomery Bell Academy
Trinity (Louisville, Ky.) looked extremely impressive for the second week in a row, this time hammering Montgomery Bell Academy (Nashville, Tenn.) 66-21.

The Shamrocks looked dominant for the second week in a row. Last week, they pounded Brentwood Academy 45-7.

Quarterback Travis Wright once again looked stellar for Trinity, throwing for 208 yards and three scores in the first half, two going to electric junior James Quick.

Montgomery Bell Academy scored in the third quarter, but Wright and Trinity struck once again.

Wright hit Marquis Smith for a 57-yard touchdown to bring the score to 38-14. A Dalyn Dawkins touchdown run and another Wright touchdown pass to Quick turned this completely one-sided.

After removing its starters, Trinity continued to score, leading to the 66-21 final.

According to the Louisville Courier Journal, Wright finished the night completing 16 of 17 passes for 336 yards and five touchdowns while Quick had nine catches for 153 yards and three scores.

Walker erupts in Rockhurst win
Senior running back Jordan Walker rushed for 400 yards and four scores and added a 25-yard touchdown reception leading Rockhurst (Kansas City, Mo.) to a 35-20 win over Blue Springs (Mo.).

Blue Springs struck first when quarterback Kyle Brown found running back Marcus Brown on a 14-yard touchdown pass but Walker responded quickly with a 46-yard TD run to even the score.

Walker ripped off a 60-yard touchdown run, before Blue Springs tied it 14-14 on a 19-yard scoring toss from Kyle Brown to Jordan Barnwell.

In the second half, Walker turned it up a notch. His third rushing touchdown, this one from 6 yards out, gave Rockhurst a 21-14 lead and then caught a 25-yard touchdown pass on 4th down to give Rockhurst a 28-14 lead.

Blue Springs kept fighting, scoring again to narrow the gap to 28-20, before Walker struck once more.

He rushed for another score that Rockhurst's lead to the final margin.

Mount Carmel gets revenge on Simeon
In a rematch of last year's thrilling season opener that resulted in a 47-41 victory for Simeon (Chicago), Mount Carmel (Chicago) exacted revenge against the Wolverines, winning 23-6.

The showdown, played at Soldier Field, pitted arguably the city's top public school team against its top non-public squad. It was the first game of the 2011 season in Illinois.

Quarterback Don Butkus junior, the great nephew of Bears legend Dick Butkus, led Mount Carmel, throwing for one touchdown and rushing for another.

"He's a very cerebral quarterback," Mount Carmel head coach Frank Lenti told the Chicago Sun-Times.

Running back Brandon Greer also enjoyed a big game, exploding for 124 yards on only 11 carries, including a 41-yard touchdown scamper in the third quarter.

Robert Gregory, one of Simeon's two coveted recruits (along with OL Jordan Diamond), threw for two scores in defeat for the Wolverines.
