Starting Five
1. West is Best…Again: Mankato West defeated Coon Rapids 62-49 Tuesday to claim its fifth-straight Daily Globe Trojan Holiday Classic in Worthington. Leading the way for the Scarlets were many of the key players who held down important roles on the West 4A state championship football team this fall. Ray Teachout, the quarterback on that team, had 5 points and played strong defense, Aaron Richter, the Scarlets’ leading receiver, had a team high 10 rebounds and another standout, receiver Mike Richter, also played well, with 10 points. But the real star on this night was Derrick Cattrysee, who had 25 points and 11 assists to lead both teams in those categories. The Scarlets improved to 6-1 with the win and are ranked No. 4 in the state in 3A.
2. Minneota Wins LQPV Invite: Four players scored in double figures, led by Shane Hennen’s 23 points, as Minneota improved to 7-2 with a 76-68 win over Lac qui Parle Valley in the championship game of the LQPV Invite Tuesday. Also scoring in double digits for Minneota were Brett Pryzmus (14), Tony Noyes (13) and Will Kurka (10). Eric Paulson led LQPV with 21 points, making six 3-pointers in the loss.
3. Dower Delivers: Osseo advanced to the finals of the Granite City Classic in St. Cloud with a 62-58 win over a tough Minneapolis Washburn team. Sam Dower scored 21 points in the win to lead the Orioles. Dower, a 6-foot-9 Gonzaga signee, scored 32 points in a 74-57 win over Buffalo last week. After a season-opening loss to top-ranked Henry Sibley, the Orioles are now 6-1 with Dower averaging just under 24 points per game.
4. Sonnen Shines: Marc Sonnen, a 6-3 guard from Tartan who has signed with Northern Iowa, scored 28 points in Tartan’s 47-41 win over Prior Lake in the championship game of the Tartan Tournament. Sonnen scored 32 points in a 75-61 win over Spring Lake Park in the tournament opener.
5. Richfield’s Robinson Goes Big: Renard Robinson had a game he will never forget Monday. Robinson scored 42 points and hauled in 20 rebounds to lead Richfield to a 95-70 win over Fairmont. Richfield is 6-0 heading into Wednesday’s title game of the Owatonna Invitational. The Spartans are in a tough conference, the Classic Suburban, which features top-ranked Henry Sibley, a talented Tartan team and Hill-Murray and North Saint Paul teams off to strong starts.
Three to Watch
1. Dawson-Boyd: The Blackjacks improved to 5-3 with a 59-48 win over Castlewood in the title game of the Milbank Shootout. Kruiz Lindblad scored 24 points and added 12 rebounds, while Colin Bergeson had 10 points and 12 rebounds and Matt Anderson 11 points for Dawson-Boyd.
2. Michael Burfeind, Lewiston-Altura: Burfeind scored 23 points, had 16 rebounds and 6 blocked shots in a 52-49 loss to Poynette, Wis., in the championship game of the Winona State Classic.
3. Seantrel Henderson, Cretin-Derham Hall: Henderson, a junior who will be one of the nation’s top football recruits next season, is 6-7 and over 300 pounds, but athletic and nimble enough to also be a force on the hardwood. Henderson led the Raiders with 22 points in a 70-62 win over Holy Angels Monday and scored 21 points in a 60-57 loss to Roseville Tuesday.
Two Hot Too Handle
1. Thomas Sims, Simley: Sims drained a game-winner with 2.3 seconds left to give the Spartans a 66-64 win over St. Michael Albertville in the championship game of the Simley Tournament at the famous Simley Fieldhouse Tuesday. Sims finished with 25 points in the win and scored 49 points in the two games. Simley defeated Breck 75-59 Monday with Sims scoring 24.
2. Jarrod Peterson, Wayzata: Peterson made 8 3-pointers – all in the first half – and finished with 36 points to help the Trojans to a 109-98 win over Como Park in the Anoka Tournament. Teammate Nolan Odland added 29 for Wayzata, who improved to 6-1 with the win.
