Thursday roundup: Lone Peak is current Utah king; Guyer rolls past Coppell

There's a new football king in Utah.

Behind a remarkable performance from senior quarterback Chase Hansen, Lone Peak (Highland) High School stopped Bingham's (South Jordan) 31-game win streak against Utah teams with a 45-24 victory on Thursday night in South Jordan.

According to abc4.com, Hansen, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound standout completed 21 of 33 passes for 381 yards and six touchdowns, and rushed 17 times for 94 yards as Lone Peak improved to 7-0.

It was Bingham's first defeat against a Utah team since a 21-17 loss to Alta in the 2008 state title game.

Hansen's favorite target was Connor Humphrey, who caught touchdowns of 80, 19 and 56 yards, the former on the first play of the game. Teammate Talon Shumway contributed two other TD receptions.

The Utah-bound quarterback has now completed 106 of 162 passes for 1,632 yards and 22 touchdowns. He's also rushed for 545 yards and six more scores.

"I felt like when things weren't there for us, our guys kept working, our line kept blocking," Hansen told the Salt Lake Tribune. "Things opened up. We executed well. And even when we didn't execute well, things still worked for us."

Daniel Palepoi rushed for 113 yards and Brady Lail threw two touchdown passes for Bingham (5-2). Palepoi left the game in the first half with concussion-like conditions and never returned.

Afterward, Bingham coach Dave Peck made no excuses. His team is the two-time defending state champion.

"I don't see anyone better than Lone Peak," he told the Tribune. "If there's a better team in Utah, I don't know where they are."

GUYER 31, COPPELL 7

Coppell (Texas) (4-1) scored on its first possession, then a lightning storm followed shortly after followed by a Guyer (Denton) avalanche.

According to the Coppell Gazette, the game was delayed 45 minutes and visiting Coppell never really returned while sustaining its first loss of the season.

Jerrod Heard, a 6-2, 180-pound sophomore, took over the game with a pair of scoring passes to senior wideout Conner Crane and a 14-yard TD run to go up 23-7.

Heard ran for another score on a 20-yard scamper and the host team (4-1) was in complete command.

According to DentonRC.com, Heard finished with pedestrian numbers – 93 yards passing and 64 yards rushing. Teammate Sebastain Williams led the way with 84 yards rushing on 13 carries.

Most of the credit should go to the Guyer defense which allowed just 93 yards rushing, including 42 on 18 carries to the district's leading rusher Luke Jenner.

Asked about how the weather delay effected the game, Guyer coach John Walsh told Dentonrc.com reporter Adam Boedeker, "It's real simple. … We didn't over coach or under coach. I just told them to take their pads off and act like a mature football team, and we got a little intense before we went out. I think it carried out to the field, and it showed."

We wonder what that "little intensity" entailed. Whatever it was, it worked.
