It was a showdown of Cincinnati vs. Columbus this past Friday night in the state capital.
Two premier Cincinnati-area football teams from the Fort Ancient Valley Conference traveled north to Columbus and came away with significant wins over some of the state’s best Division III opponents.
Cincinnati Winton Woods defeated Bishop Watterson 19-13 in overtime at Hawley Field. Watterson was ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press Division III poll, while Winton Woods was ranked No. 8 in Division II.
Winton Woods (3-1) was led by senior running back Jeremiah Goins, who rushed for 161 yards on 21 carries and a 2-yard touchdown in overtime. Senior quarterback Dominique Brown, a University of Cincinnati commit, rushed 26 times for 120 yards and a touchdown.
"For us to come up here to Columbus and beat (Watterson) said a lot about our team," Winton Woods athletic director Herb Woeste told the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Winton Woods next plays Kings Mills Kings (1-3) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Cincinnati Anderson (4-0) stayed a game ahead of Winton Woods in the FAVC Buckeye division with a 28-25 win over host Columbus DeSales. Winton Woods plays at Anderson in a much-anticipated matchup on Oct. 2.
Anderson senior quarterback Brandon Bornhauser rushed 19 times for 121 yards and two touchdowns to help lead the Redskins during the trip north on Friday night. Senior running back Kyle Slater added 18 carries for 92 yards and two touchdowns.
"Obviously, they were keying on Kyle, and our quarterback made some great reads and, subsequently, some big plays for us (Friday)," Anderson coach Jeff Giesting told the Columbus Dispatch.
Although the Redskins won, Anderson lost senior offensive lineman Andrew Norwell (an Ohio State commit) to a season-ending injury he suffered on the third play of the game. On Monday, Giesting told the Cincinnati Enquirer that Norwell would miss the remainder of the football season. However, Norwell should be ready for his college career starting in 2010.
"The doctors feel he will recover nicely and the injury should not affect his future at Ohio State," Giesting told the Enquirer.
Friday’s game was the first time the two teams played since Anderson defeated DeSales 14-10 in a Division II state semifinal game last November. The loss on Friday dropped DeSales to 2-2. DeSales sophomore running back Warren Ball had 16 carries for 122 yards and a touchdown.
"We have to look at what’s ahead, not behind," DeSales coach Ryan Wiggins told the Dispatch.
