This is one of the most prestigious team awards in all of high school sports and it is an exclusive honor reserved for the top 100 teams nationwide. In order to be eligible, a team must win a state championship and be highly ranked in the
MaxPreps National Rankings. For soccer, only 20 of the country's best are invited and with nearly 34,000 competing varsity teams. This puts the Wildcats ahead of 99.9 percent of their opponents!
On Friday, Nov. 18 senior Cammie Murtha scored the game-winning goal to lead the Wildcats to a 3-2 overtime victory and their first MPSSAA state title at Loyola University.
After a strong regular season, the Wildcats earned their first trip to the
MPSSAA Class 4A state tournament since 2002 and 5 wins later, the team claimed its first title in its first state final appearance.
En route to the state championship game, 8-year head coach Liz Robinson led the Wildcats to four playoff wins over Bethesda-Chevy Chase (2-0), Churchill (1-0), North Point (3-2) and a comeback win (5-4) over Wootton for the Class 4A West Region title.
At the end of the season (18-1), Walter Johnson finished ranked
No.1 in Class 4A,
No.1 in the state and
No.32 in the nation in the MaxPreps rankings system.
These incredible season achievements have earned the Walter Johnson Wildcats an invitation to the 12th Annual Tour of Champions.
Please join us as we celebrate with the girls soccer team, coaching staff, students and fans on Friday, Feb. 3 at 5:30 p.m. during halftime of the boys basketball game in the gym.
