MaxPreps is pleased to announce that the
Penfield (N.Y.) Patriots have officially been named to the 12th Annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard, which is in its seventh year honoring volleyball.
This is one of the most prestigious team awards in all of high school sports and it is an exclusive honor reserved for the top 100 teams nationwide. In order to be eligible, a team must win a state championship and be highly ranked in the
MaxPreps National Rankings. For volleyball, only 10 of the country's best are invited and with nearly 20,000 competing varsity teams. This puts the Patriots ahead of 99.9 percent of their opponents!
On Sunday, Nov. 20 the Patriots captured the NYSPHSAA Class AA state title and successfully dethroned defending state champion Connetquot with a four set victory (20-25, 27-25, 25-12, 25-20). The win capped the an undefeated (50-0) season and led the team to its first title since 2014 and third in six years.
En route to the state crown, the Patriots earned a 3-0 win over Victor for the Section V Class AA title and a 3-0 win in the Far West Regional State Qualifier. The day before the state final, the Patriots swept Connetquot, Shenendehowa and Corning-Painted Post (2-0) in the state semifinal pool play to secure their spot in the state title game.
At the end of their state championship season, the team finished highly ranked in the MaxPreps rankings — No.1 in Class AA, No.1 in the state, No.11 in the Xcellent 25 and No.44 in the nation. On top of that, Penfield's eight-year head coach Andrew Solomon was named the National Coach of the Year by MaxPreps.
These incredible season achievements have earned the Penfield Patriots an invitation to the 12th Annual Tour of Champions.
